INESC Porto strengthened by ISEP prepares to export robotic technology
INESC Port and ISEP (Higher Engineering Institute in Porto) formalised the merger of their robotics groups - The Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) and the Autonomous Systems Laboratory (LSA) on 16th February 2011. Close to 50 collaborators will become part of the new Robotics Unit at INESC Porto which aims to take on a more international dimension and look to rapidly expanding markets. This is a strategic move from the group which is now the largest robotics unit in the north of Portugal. Highlights from the ceremony of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding include the exhibition of robotics equipment with TriMARES, the underwater surveillance robot that will be exported to Brazil, as the centre piece.

INESC Porto project ShoeID is the key to the success of the Kyaia Group
The Portuguese Footwear Group Kyaia is one of the winners of the European RETA awards (Retail Technologies Awards) from the EHI Retail Institute. The Group was awarded the Best Enterprise Solution prize for their project ShoeID which was developed in conjunction with INESC Porto. The award acknowledges the improvements made by the Kyaia Group using RFID technology (Radio Frequency Identification) throughout the logistics chain of their international brand FLY London.

The Moscow Continuous Skeleton Team (MCST) were the winners of the first edition of the Hand Geometric Points Detection Competition (HGC2011), organised by INESC Porto. The competition registered 15 participants from nine different countries.

Researcher from LIAAD and CRACS winner at CONET/EWSN 2011 Master and PhD Thesis Awards
Pedro Pereira Rodrigues, a researcher from the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) and collaborator at the Center for Research in Advanced Computer Systems (CRACS), won the award for the Best PhD Academic Work - CONET/EWSN 2011 with his dissertation on “Learning from Ubiquitous Data Streams: Clustering Data and Data Sources”. He defended the dissertation in October 2010 at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP) and his dissertation supervisors were João Gama (LIAAD and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto - FEP) and Luís Lopes (CRACS and FCUP).
