Where are you now?
Every month INESC TEC sends highly qualified individuals into the market. These individuals often then go on to occupy important positions in some of the best national and international companies or they opt to form spin-offs. As the best way to perform technology transfer is through individuals, this section is dedicated to collaborators that trained at INESC TEC and now star in other companies and institutions.
Tiago Nascimento, Federal University of Paraíba (Brazil), Professor and Researcher
- Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2010 - 2012
- Centres at INESC TEC where you worked: Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB)
- Projects you participated in: RobVigil; Perception-Driven Coordinated Multi-Robot Motion Control; robotic soccer team – 5dpo
Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC
As soon as I left INESC TEC, after concluding my PhD, I returned to Brazil and I started working at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB). At this University, I created LaSER (Laboratory of Embedded Systems and Robotics), together with two other professors, and a robotics systems research team. In just two years we managed to gather over 20 students who are now working in different research projects.
My experience at INESC TEC was really helpful because I worked in research projects, which is useful for my work today. I do not think INESC TEC has changed a lot since I left but I know that the partnerships with Brazil have been increasing.
Filipe Magalhães, HBM FiberSensing, New Product Launch Manager
- Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2006 - 2013
- Centres at INESC TEC where you worked: Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP)
- Projects you participated in: NextGenPCF – Next Generation Photonic Crystal Fibers; Cyclops – Single-Pixel Imaging LIDAR System Based on Compressive Sensing
Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC
HBM FiberSensing, a world leader in optical fibre Bragg sensors for advanced monitoring applications, is an INESC TEC spin-off company, and so my transition was smooth and I stayed among friends. Because INESC TEC often works with HBM FiberSensing and because of my academic training, I was familiar with the company’s activity.
This new challenge was been quite interesting and motivating, and I am excited to be working with the real needs of clients and markets. My seven years at INESC TEC were fundamental for my position at FiberSensing because it was an opportunity to gain experience in the technology that the company develops and commercialises. Looking back, I think I made the right choices, but I was lucky enough to have always been advised by excellent people who have always supported and taught me.
I think INESC TEC hasn’t changed a lot since I left, but it is good to see that INESC TEC is still dynamic and working on strategies to face current and foreseeable circumstances in the scientific scene.
Carlos Oliveira, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Head of Communication and Cooperation
- Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 1991-1995
- Centres at INESC TEC where you worked: SARI – Advanced Services in Integrated Networks, one of the first areas of expertise at the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM)
- Projects you participated in: Eurescom IMS1 - Integrated Multimedia Services at 1Mbps, Telematique PATRIMATIC, Alphaphotographic videotex Terminal over RDIS.
Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC
I left INESC Porto in 1996 to create a startup company – Imediata, Sistemas Multimédia, SA – where I in charge of technological innovation for three years. After that, I began working at FEUP, where I started the ICT Support Office.
In 2005, I became the director of FEUP’s Image, Communication and Cooperation Services, where I work with a fantastic team of about 30 people. I am still interested in multimedia communications, in which INESC Porto was pioneer in Portugal.
My experience at INESC TEC showed me the importance of internationalisation and innovation for the competitiveness of companies. In my opinion, INESC TEC has grown a lot and is now more managed like a business. I hope that its young and irreverent spirit hasn’t changed!
