From land to the deep sea – INESC TEC technologies at the Sea fair
A robot that operates in the naval industry, technology for managing ports more effectively, robots used in search and rescue missions, and an underwater robot for civil and military applications in the deep sea – CARLoS, 3PORT, ICARUS and TURTLE, respectively – were some of the technologies that INESC TEC showcased at the 5th edition of the Sea Fair (Fórum do Mar), which took place between 16 and 19 November at Exponor (Porto).

INESC TEC creates 1st 3D video system in the world to help patients with epilepsy
A team of researchers from INESC TEC’s Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER), led by João Paulo Cunha, have created the first system in the world to use 3D video technology to extract body movements during epileptic seizures. This new system can help health professionals to diagnose patients and define therapies, not only for epilepsy patients, but also for patients with other neurological illnesses, such as Parkinson’s.

INESC TEC develops underwater docking station for underwater robots
In October 2015, two teams from INESC TEC’s Centres for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) and Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB) have started working on project ENDURE, led by INESC TEC (project leader). The goal with this project is to develop an underwater docking station for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The station will allow these vehicles to remain in the ocean for long periods of time.

In October 2015, INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) started working on project BLUECOM+, whose goal is to connect humans and systems in remote locations of the ocean using broadband and low-cost communications. The project, led by INESC TEC and coordinated by the researcher Rui Campos, includes the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA, the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute), and MARLO AS (Norway) as partners.

German company purchases license of software developed by INESC TEC
The software IBT, INESC Porto Beat Tracking, developed by the research group led by Matthew Davies, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), has stirred up interest with Mamoworld, a German company. The company, which signed the license on 15 November, has combined the IBT with software of their own in order to commercially exploit it.

INESC TEC concludes project Senseiver with presentation of results in Serbia
After four years, project “Senseiver: Low-cost and energy-efficient LTCC sensor/IR-UWB transceiver solutions for sustainable healthy environment” was concluded in November 2015. The INESC TEC team working on this project was composed of members of the Centres for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) and Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB). The final conference of this project was the greatest event of the Senseiver, which took place in the first week of October, in Novi-Sad, Serbia, where the INESC TEC presented the results obtained throughout the project.

Brazilian federal representative visits INESC TEC to get to know technology for the Sea
Edinho Bez, a Brazilian Federal Member of Parliement, visited INESC TEC on January 18. As a result he had the opportunity to get familisarised with the technologies INESC TEC has developed for the sea – namely for port management, following the visit to APDL (Port Authority of Leixões and Viana do Castelo). Together with the APDL and TRIEDE, INESC TEC has developed a solution of reference for ports.
