German company purchases license of software developed by INESC TEC

The software IBT, INESC Porto Beat Tracking, developed by the research group led by Matthew Davies, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), has stirred up interest with Mamoworld, a German  company. The company, which signed the license on 15 November, has combined the IBT with software of their own in order to commercially exploit it.

The IBT, now on the webpage of the group “Research in Sound and Music Computing at INESC TEC/Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (SMC Group)”, is available under an open-source license.

The IBT is the result of another software called Marsyas, which was developed by George Tzanetakis (Associate Professor at University of Victoria, Canada). After a negotiation period between INESC TEC’s Technology Licensing Office, Mamoworld and George Tzanetakis, and following several technical trials, an agreement was reached, namely in terms of the royalties and scope of the license. On 15 November, a license was signed that allows Mamoworld to incorporate the IBT in their software without the obligations associated with the open-source license.
