Limelight
Every month, this section will honour a collaborator for an exceptional contribution in his/her area of activity. BIP’s Editors will have the final choice. However, the cooperation of every Unit Coordinator is precious since they will be the ones suggesting which collaborator should be distinguished.
Joana Dumas (LIAAD) | November 2015
The Coordinator of INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) stated – “Ever since Joana Dumas started working at LIAAD, she was able to adapt to new expectations, and always greeted new responsibilities with a smile. She deals with many new faces and different personalities, and oftentimes she is given new tasks, sometimes outside the scope of her secretarial work. Sometimes she asks: ‘How can I get better?’, and she has become a fundamental member who works well and makes other people work too. She is always available, she never complains, and she is assertive and humble. And even though life is not always fair, Joana has been able to manage more difficult periods, and is available no matter what. And she is always trying to improve and go even further.”
Matthew Davies and Nuno Felício (CTM and SAL) | December 2015
The manager of INESC TEC’s Technology Licensing Office (SAL) and the Coordinators of the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) stated: “We would like to nominate Nuno Felício (SAL) and Matthew Davies (CTM) for the licensing of the IBT. Nuno and Matthew did an amazing job in licensing the software with Mamoworld, a German company in the area of media software. IBT is a result of the open source software Marsyas, developed by INESC TEC three years ago. By nominating them for the Limelight, we are acknowledging that licensing technology is the best path for INESC TEC and for companies when technology transfer researchers and professionals are involved. Because this software is based on Marsyas, it was necessary to involve its author (George Tzanetakis – University of Victoria, Canada) in the process. Together with George, Nuno Felício and Matthew Davies have refined the IBT’s value proposal for Mamoworld. The negotiation period was long and difficult, but they were successful!”
Joana Gonçalves (Legal Support) | January 2016
The manager of the Legal Support service stated – “Joana’s contribution last month was key to assure the conclusion, in a timely manner, of the numerous public procurement procedures to purchase equipment, as part of the ‘Financiamento Plurianual’ (multiannual funding programme). Concluding this in 2015 was crucial to obtain the maximum funding possible. The purchases took place mainly in December, the month in which it was also necessary to start a set of legal procedures for outsourcing services, as part of a contract with the APDL.
All this required an extraordinary effort from Joana. She did a remarkable job contacting with the multiple internal and external parties involved, and she is also very organised and resilient. This is amazing, especially for someone who hasn’t worked here for long. It is also important to stress that, even though supervised by me, Joana is able to work very autonomously.
Lastly, I have to stress the serenity and willingness that characterises her work, even if sometimes that work is sometimes unrewarding!”
Ana Paula Silva (CSIG Secretary) | January 2016
The Coordinators of the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG) stated – “We would like to nominate Ana Paula Silva for the Limelight for her performance over the last year. In 2015, Ana Paula Silva was the secretary to CSIG, CBER and SIG. Simultaneously, she provided support to LIAAD. All this led to a significant increase in her workload, and she even had to work during the weekends. This situation has been identified and corrected. However, because of her commitment and dedication, we believe that this example should be highlighted.”
Margarida Gonçalves (Human Resources) | January 2016
The Board of Directors stated: “Margarida was at INESC TEC several nights until five in the morning to complete the team confirmation process required by the FCT. Afterwards, the process was frustratingly annulled by the new Minister. However, this just shows an extreme dedication that is worth highlighting.”
