Serious Thinking

“Sharing stories (…) and debating new ideas daily, whether during lunch time or during the five minutes of the coffee break, leads to the establishment of connections between us and to social and professional growth.” Cláudia Rocha (CRIIS)

Gallery of the Uncommon

We know that people from science and technology always have some kind of genius in them. If you are thinking about Einstein, we are thinking about José Carlos Sousa of the Management Information Systems Service of INESC TEC.

Limelight

Every month, this section will honour a collaborator for an exceptional contribution in his/her area of activity. BIP’s Editors will have the final choice. However, the cooperation of every Centre Coordinator is precious since they will be the ones suggesting which collaborator should be distinguished.

Vítor Cerqueira

Vítor cerqueira, liaad

“Vitor Cerqueira is a PhD student of professor Luís Torgo co-guided by Carlos Soares. Vitor is currently starting his thesis after a first year of classes within FEUP’s doctoral programme. During the last year, Vitor has also been a grant holder in the CORAL project. Vitor’s work during the last year has been excellent in every regard, as confirmed by the recent award of Best Student ML Paper at the European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML/PKDD). Because of this prestigious international award, his work, and his commitment and dedication, I am happy to propose Vitor for Limelight. I believe this distinction is completely merited.”

José Pereira

José Costa Pereira, CTM

"CTM’s Coordination team proposes researcher José Maria Pereira for Limelight, for his contribution to the success of the 2017 VISUM Summer School. In every edition, VISUM has made innovations to its model as a way to improve its impact. For this 5th edition, VISUM organised for the first time a competition between participants, which was composed of three challenges. Despite being his first time at VISUM, José accepted the challenge set by the rest of the Organising Committee, which was to implement this new aspect of the programme. This included contributing to the definition of the challenges’ theme, selecting data for the development and evaluation of the solutions proposed by students, preparing a technologic platform for submitting solutions, and creating baseline solutions for each of the challenges set for the students as a way to help them start the creation of their own solutions. José’s contribution resulted in a very strong interaction with the students, helping them whenever needed."

Gaspar Pacheco

Gaspar Pacheco, CAP

“During the last months, Gaspar Pacheco, who carries out the task of supporting the R&D activities at the Centre for Applied Photonics, developed the laser pointer system for the interactive scale model of the medieval city installed at the Casa do Infante, in the Ribeira do Porto. The new system, entirely developed by Gaspar under a contract with the Porto City Council, required the development of a mechanic system for the support and the movement of the semiconductor laser, an entire electronic control system, and a lot of programming.”
