INESC TEC organises International Symposium on Bulk Power Systems Dynamics and Control

Espinho was the location chosen by INESC TEC to hold the 10th Bulk Power Systems Dynamics and Control Symposium – IREP’2017, devoted to the theme “The Power System of the Future: Global Dynamics arising from Distributed Actions”, which took place between the 27th of August and the 1st of September.

The event welcomed participants from 24 countries and four continents, in a programme that included more than 70 technical presentations. The attendance included 123 participants – researchers and senior staff from companies of the electricity sector of numerous countries. This high-level event gathered the most reputable researchers of the world in the domain of dynamic behaviour of electrical systems.

The first day had the participation of António Albino Marques, Director of System Operation at REN, in an opening conference focused on the theme “Operation of a power system with a large share of renewable sources”. This presentation showed the evolution of the Portuguese electrical system in the last 10 years, with an emphasis on the sharing of renewable energy by means of the currently installed capacity. The speaker also presented the biggest challenges and risks of these systems, as well as the processes adopted to handle these problems, using real examples.

The event was organised by the Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES) of INESC TEC, namely João Peças Lopes (Conference Chair), Manuel Matos, Jorge Pereira, André Madureira, Bernardo Silva, Carlos Moreira, Helena Vasconcelos and Paula Castro.

EFACEC Power Solutions and REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais sponsored the conference.

This international initiative began in 1988 and has been managed since 1994 by the International Institute of Research and Education in Power System Dynamics (IREP), which has already organised the event in the USA (1988, 1991 and 2007), Switzerland (1994), Greece (1998, 2013), Japan (2001), Italy (2004) and Brazil (2010).
