Portuguese ports are world pioneers in technological innovation
Two of the most technologically advanced ports in the world are Portuguese. The Ports of Leixões and Viana do Castelo, managed by the Port Authority of the Ports of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo (APDL), were the pilot in an innovation project led by INESC TEC and TRIEDE TTI. The tool 3Port makes it possible not only to manage the different needs and business processes of port authorities in an integrated way, but also to interact with the general public, which can see, in real time, what is happening in the port (http://livemap.apdl.pt).

Porto engineering wins international robotics competition in Italy
A team of INESC TEC researchers and students from the Porto School of Engineering (ISEP) won the Eurathlon Grand Challenge in Piombino, Italy, an international competition of robots used for search and rescue operations, which took place between 17 and 25 September.

INESC TEC develops first deep sea robotic platform made in Portugal
INESC TEC has developed the first underwater robotic platform for the deep sea which has been completely developed in Portugal, in partnership with Portuguese companies. Project TURTLE - Technologies for long-term presence in the deep sea kicked off in 2014.

INESC TEC in project with IKEA Industry
INESC TEC’s Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering (CESE) is currently providing services to IKEA Industry. The goal is to design the layout for the production system and thus optimise the use of machines, increasing efficiency and reducing costs. Following this project, IKEA Industry hopes to double their production capacity.

INESC TEC paper highlighted in professional North-American publication
In August 2015, the paper “Knowledge sharing in project-based organizations: Overcoming the informational limbo”, written by Maria Almeida (former researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering, CESE) and António Lucas Soares, also from CESE, was highlighted in the newsletter of the Project Management Institute Houston, one of the most important international institutes in the area of project management.

INESC TEC researcher develops programme that predicts neurotoxicity of substances
An international research team has conducted a study where the goal was to use organoids created from stem cells, capable of emulating the complexity of the human nervous system, in order to identify the neurotoxicity of several substances. One of the team members is Vítor Santos Costa, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS).

Call for abstracts is now open for energy conference organised by INESC TEC
INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES) is organising the 13th edition of the International Conference on the European Energy Market, EEM2016. The 2016 edition of the conference will take place between 6 and 9 June at FEUP, which is also part of the organising committee. Abstracts can be submitted until November 2015.

INESC TEC team is finalist of the Wagner Prize in the United States
A team from INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI) is a finalist of the Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in the Practice of Operations Research, organised by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) in the United States, together with other international researchers and companies, including Ford Motor Company, in partnership with University of Michigan, the French postal services La Poste, in conjunction with the MIT and WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management, and CSX Transportation, in partnership with the University of Illinois.

Luís Guimarães, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI), has received the award for best 2013 and 2014 PhD thesis (award given every two years) and best 2015 scientific paper, as part of the APDIO Congress – Portuguese Association for Operational Research (IO2015), which took place between 7 and 9 September at the Management School of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre.

INESC TEC organised, between 7 and 11 September, the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML PKDD 2015), a conference which focuses on the areas of machine learning and data mining. The conference took place at the Alfândega Congress Centre in Porto.

INESC TEC proposes energy management using computational intelligence
Managing energy through computational intelligence, as if it were a brain – is the goal that Portugal wants to achieve and the theme discussed at the ISAP 2015 (International Conference on Intelligent Systems Applications to Power Systems, Conference and Debate), organised by INESC TEC in the city of Porto, which took place between 11 and 17 September. This was the 18th edition of the forum. The last edition took place in Tokyo.

INESC TEC participates in final demonstration of project CARloS
Between 25 and 27 August, INESC TEC participated in the final demonstration of European project CARloS - CooperAtive Robot for Large Spaces manufacturing, which took place in La Coruña, Spain. The prototype of the robot was successfully demonstrated at the facilities of the shipyards “Astilleros Jose Valiña”, the end user of the technology and one of the project’s partners.

The Manufuture 2015 (B2B Brokerage Event of Enterprise Europe Network) is co-organised by INESC TEC, partner of the Network, and will take place between 23 and 24 November in Luxembourg. Registrations are open until 20 November and are free of charge. The event is organised in partnership with Luxinnovation, CCI Picardie and Sabanci Universitesi.
