INESC TEC and the ocean exploration: full steam ahead!
About 60M€, distributed by 18 projects, will be used to develop and transfer sea-related technologies until 2018. INESC TEC has been investing in the development of prototypes in this sector in order to create a cluster of technological competences for the sea in Portugal, more specifically for the deep sea. The Institute hopes to play a fundamental role in the extension of the Portuguese Continental Shelf.

INESC TEC develops platform to assess security of the electrical system
As part of European project iTesla (Innovative Tools for Electrical System Security within Large Areas), which now comes to an end, INESC TEC has developed a flexible, modular and interoperable platform that makes it possible to assess the dynamic security of the power system in real time, for several contingencies and types of security problems, taking into consideration the uncertainty associated with the growing integration of renewable power.

INESC TEC concludes project to fight depression
Project Stop Depression (Stepped care treatments and digital solutions for depression and suicide prevention in primary care), which featured a large team from INESC TEC’s Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG), was concluded in July, with the Conference “II Conferência Cuidar + da Depressão: Experiências e Práticas Inovadoras nos Cuidados de Saúde Primários” (Conference Care + for Depression), which took place at the University Institute of Maia (ISMAI).

On 1 June, INESC TEC started a new project called “CONTEXTWA: Middleware and Context Inference Techniques from Data-Streams for the Development of Context-Aware Services using Mobile Devices”, where the goal is to apply middleware and inference techniques from data flows in order to develop services based on context for mobile devices. INESC TEC is the tenderer.

INESC TEC co-organises World Robotic Sailing Championship
Between 5 and 10 September, the River Lima, in the city of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, will be filled with 100% autonomous vehicles equipped with innovative robotic applications. The vehicles will be participating in the World Robotic Sailing Championship – WRSC 2016, organised by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC).

Paulo Caldas, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP) and assistant professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana (IPVC), was named Best Reviewer 2015 of the Journal of Optics & Laser Technology, published by Elsevier, for his “excellent work, quality and objectivity in the revision of papers.”

Project 3Port chosen as good practice in Public Administration
The Portuguese RCC – Rede Comum do Conhecimento (Common Network of Knowledge), which is part of the AMA - Agência para a Modernização Administrativa (Agency for Administrative Modernisation), has chosen project 3Port (Ports and Environmental Management Information System) as a good practice in public administration. The RCC considers that the project is extremely relevant, as it enables a “more efficient, transparent and collaborative Public Administration.”

The paper “Understanding attitudes towards public transport and private car: A qualitative study”, authored by Gabriela Beirão and José Sarsfield Cabral, researchers at INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI), received the Transport Policy Prize as part of the WCTR 2016 (14th World Conference on Transport Research), which took place in July 2016, in Shanghai, China.
