INESC TEC concludes project to fight depression
Project Stop Depression (Stepped care treatments and digital solutions for depression and suicide prevention in primary care), which featured a large team from INESC TEC’s Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG), was concluded in July, with the Conference “II Conferência Cuidar + da Depressão: Experiências e Práticas Inovadoras nos Cuidados de Saúde Primários” (Conference Care + for Depression), which took place at the University Institute of Maia (ISMAI).
In this second edition of the conference, the researchers presented the model of intervention for treating depression developed as part of project Stop Depression, and implemented in primary healthcare units in the city of Porto, while healthcare professionals presented their experiences. The forms of assessing and treating depression and the respective online platforms are being used at ACeS Porto (Group of Healthcare Centres in Western Porto) since March 2016.
Even though the project is now over, more results will be presented in a few months. This project proposed new forms of intervention to fight depression and to prevent suicide, by implementing a stepped-care model supported by information and communication tools, including awareness initiatives. The platforms created have two components: providing healthcare (medical, nursing or psychological) and therapeutic activities to the patient.
Stop Depression’s public campaign “Cuidar mais. Vamos vencer a depressão” (Care +: let’s beat depression) will continue until October 2016 in order to improve the lives of at least 500 patients in the city of Porto. This project is based on three key points: early detection of new depression situations and risk of suicide; treat situations according to the degree of seriousness; and finally improve treatment with information technology, such as the Internet and smartphones.
The INESC TEC researchers involved in this project are Alexandre Costa, António Gaspar, Artur Rocha, Fernando Marques, José Correia, José Ornelas, Marco Oliveira and Ricardo Henriques.
Led by the University Institute of Maia, Stop Depression featured as partners: INESC TEC, the Regional Health Administration of the North of Portugal (ARS), the SKA and Arkimedes (Norway). This project was funded by the EEA Grants, as part of the Public Health Initiatives.
