INESC TEC researcher receives award for best master’s dissertation

Carlos Costa, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics in Industry and Intelligent Systems (CRIIS), won the award for best Portuguese master’s dissertation in the area of robotics.

The dissertation, titled “Robot Self-Localization in Dynamic Environments”, received the award from the Portuguese Robotics Society (SPR) in May, as part of the SPR’s 10th anniversary.

According to Carlos Costa, “this award recognises not only my work and dedication, but also that of the research team involved in project CARLoS.” The researchers involved in project CARLoS (CooperAtive Robot for Large Spaces manufacturing), where INESC TEC is partner, developed a robot capable of performing stud welding for fit-out operations inside blocks of ship superstructures, a task that is arduous and highly repetitive.

“The work I did during my research offered the robotics community a robust, modular and extensible 3/6 DoF mapping and localisation system that can be used in mobile robots operating in dynamic environments”, the researcher explains.

Carlos Costa’s advisers were Armando Jorge Miranda de Sousa, professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), and Germano dos Santos Veiga, researcher at INESC TEC.
