INESC TEC is an associate in Mobilizing Programme 5G

INESC TEC is part of the consortium of the Project “Mobilizador 5G – Components and Services to 5G networks”, led by Altice Labs. Through new technological developments regarding 5G networks, this project intends not only to create new products and services, but also to promote 5G technologies and its introduction in Portugal.

The kick-off meeting happened on the 8th and 9th of January, at Altice Labs, in Aveiro, gathering 60 participants of 14 national industrial and academic institutions. From INESC TEC, the team counts on members from the Centre of Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), namely Manuel Ricardo, Filipe Ribeiro, Rui Campos and André Coelho.

The reason for this meeting was to discuss several expected activities, concerning planning, execution and integrated confirmation of a set of technological products nationally created, capable of supplying services regarding the future 5G networks. This project, with a duration of three years, is in line with the current calendar for the production of 5G technology worldwide.

Although still in a process of expectable definition until 2020, 5G technology represents a major technological advance considering the previous generation, promising liabilities over 1 Gbit/s and low latency, which will allow to properly support the massive transfer of information and services in the scope of virtual reality and augmented reality.

The organisations that integrate this consortium are: Altice Labs, Altran Portugal, EFACEC Energia, EFACEC Engenharia e Sistemas, INESC TEC, Instituto de Telecomunicações, IT Center, Nokia Solutions and Networks Portugal, One Source, PDMFC, UBIWHERE, University of Coimbra, TICE.PT and WAVECOM. Monitoring all the work are also EDP, Infraestruturas de Portugal, MEO, Porto de Aveiro and VIATEL.

As part of the Mobilizing Programmes, that aim to create new products, processes and services with high technological and innovative content, and significant impact on economy, this project is cofinanced by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), through Portugal 2020 in the scope of COMPETE 2020 (Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalization) with a total investment of close to 9.7ME.
