Where are you now?

Every month INESC TEC sends highly qualified individuals into the market. These individuals often then go on to occupy important positions in some of the best national and international companies or they opt to form spin-offs. As the best way to perform technology transfer is through individuals, this section is dedicated to collaborators that trained at INESC TEC and now star in other companies and institutions.

FILIPE OLIVEIRA, Stellar Trading Systems, Software Engineer

  • Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2015-2016
  • Centre at INESC TEC where you worked: CPES - Centre for Power and Energy Systems
  • Names of projects you were involved in: EvolvDSO and UPGRID

Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC

After I left INESC TEC, I had the opportunity to be part of a software development team at Pebble Beach Systems in London. Pebble Beach Systems, also known as PBS, is a company that focuses on creating automation software for the Broadcasting industry, being Bloomberg one of its most well-known clients. During the time that I worked at Pebble Beach Systems, I developed drivers, anomaly detection algorithms, a framework for message exchange about an TCP/IP network and an automation system for repeatedly recording live stream feeds. This last project, which lasted for six months, was definitely the most ambitious one for its complexity and it was also the most satisfying. With the completion of the automation system, I decided that this would be a good time to take the next step.

At the moment, I’m working as a Software Engineer in another company in London. However, this one focuses on developing software for entities related to investments. The decision of changing from a Broadcasting industry to an industry related to investments was because of the software development challenges labelled as mission-critical and latency sensitive, in which the demand is bigger in terms of quality, rigour and efficiency of the code. The projects in which I’m involved include exchange gateways, financial protocols, data feed of financial markets and the core of the trading system.

It’s hard to compare both companies that were mentioned above with INESC TEC. In my time at INESC TEC, I focused on the development of programmes that used mathematical models in order to forecast electrical load in a specific network. Something more related to the scientific area. Whereas now, my attention is drawn to the software engineering. Both areas are very interesting, but I think that I’ll have a better opportunity to stand out in the software engineering area.

In your opinion how did your time at INESC TEC help you in your new role?

It’s an honour that I was a part of an institution like INESC TEC, which is a national reference in research. And I would like to thank Professor Ricardo Bessa for giving me that opportunity. The time at INESC TEC was definitely very positive and, in a way, I miss it.

Although my time at INESC TEC hasn’t directly helped in my new job, it allowed me to think a little more about my future and professional ambitions.

In your opinion, how  has INESC TEC changed since you left?

Since I’m living outside Portugal, it’s not easy to answer that question. However, through the news that I’ve been following and the video reports of Porto Canal, INESC TEC seems to be on the right track.
