New project creates model for learning computer programming

A new project in collaboration with INESC TEC’s Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG), entitled SCReLProg - Auto e Corregulação na Aprendizagem Online de Programação de Computadores (in English: SCReLProg - Self-regulation and Coregulation in Online Learning of Computer Programming), started in October.

With joint leadership of Leonel Morgado from CSIG and José Paulo Cravino from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), this project intends to develop an innovative model for teaching and learning computer programming in an e-learning context, in order to counter the high level of academic failure in the computer programming curricular units, particularly in the transition to advanced programming.

The difficulties students feel, and the consequent growing need of qualified professionals in the Computer Science area, show that it is important to develop a set of learning strategies that are adequate and adjusted to these professionals, especially in a distance learning context, which requires greater discipline, autonomy, and self-regulation.

Besides INESC TEC and UTAD, the Universidade Aberta and the Research Centre on Didactics and Technology in the Education of Trainers of the University of Aveiro (CIDTFF) are part of SCReLProg. With a € 230,000 fund by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the project is scheduled to end in September of 2021.
