Where are you now?

Every month INESC TEC sends highly qualified individuals into the market. These individuals often then go on to occupy important positions in some of the best national and international companies or they opt to form spin-offs. As the best way to perform technology transfer is through individuals, this section is dedicated to collaborators that trained at INESC TEC and now star in other companies and institutions.

RUI OLIVEIRA, Portugal Telecom Inovação, Project/Programme Manager

  • INESC Porto: 2000-2004
  • INESC Porto Unit: Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM)

I left INESC Porto in 2004 to get to know the business world. I started working at PT Inovação, which is part of the Portugal Telecom group and I took on the challenge of working as a team leader in the development and management of Software projects for the application, management, setup and supply (B/OSS) of smart grids.

My experience at INESC Porto of simultaneously working with various types of technology in different projects improved my ability to adapt to new situations and made me more flexible. This has definitely helped me perform well in all of my professional roles. The opportunity to work on various innovation and research projects with diverse and new technology at INESC Porto sparked my interest in innovative technology and in gaining experience in new business contexts.

  • INESC Porto: 2008-2009
  • INESC Porto Unit: Power Systems Unit (USE)

Since June 2011 I have been working as the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Territory Planning. I am also a member of the MIT Energy Club and I am the Deputy Director of the Charter of Engineers’ official magazine – Northern region (INFO). In 2009 I was awarded best internship in electrical engineering by the Charter of Engineers and in the same year I won the Best Poster Award at the "2nd Transatlantic Conference on Renewable Energies", as part of the INESC Porto team.

As an R&D institute with its international recognition and prestige, INESC Porto offers collaborators and researchers the opportunity to work in a scientifically stimulating and professionally challenging environment. INESC Porto allowed me to work with and amongst the best.

 FILIPE SOUSA, Fraunhofer Portugal, Researcher

  • INESC Porto: 1999-2009
  • INESC Porto Units: Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM)

I left INESC Porto to work for Fraunhofer Portugal (FhP) and develop research in “Ambient Assisted Living”. I have been able to collaborate with INESC Porto in projects, such as eCAALXY, where INESC Porto and Fraunhofer Portugal are partners. I am currently coordinating project ALL4ALL (Ambient Assisted Living for All) with 35 partners including INESC Porto.

One of the advantages of having worked at INESC Porto is having experienced the “Inesquian” culture, an open culture with discussion that stands out for its continuous search for excellence as it meets society’s challenges. Furthermore, at INESC Porto I was able to get to know the academic and the business world, thus preparing me to work with them both. In recent years INESC Porto has grown a great deal both in its number of researchers and in its R&D units. This rapid growth has brought new competencies. Above all, I hope that the institute does not lose its “Inesquian” culture and it continues to be outstanding for the next 25 years.
