Hong Kong Delegation visits INESC Porto

Vladimiro Miranda, Director of INESC Porto, presented the institution to the Hong Kong Delegation, introducing the research areas in which INESC TEC (coordinated by INESC Porto) works with particular focus on electrical energy. The representatives from the delegation were Siu-Lau Ho, the Director of the Department of Electrical Engineering and he presented PolyU and Zhao Xu, a Professor in Energy who presented the research at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the same University.

The visitors had the opportunity to visit the INESC Porto building and the laboratory at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) as well as the laboratories at the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) at FEUP and the Higher Institute of Engineering in Porto (ISEP).

Sai-Lau Ho explained that the aim of their visit to INESC Porto was for PolyU to “create and strengthen links with internationally recognised universities and institutes”. In addition, “we aim to internationalise our work and we had heard of the work of Professor Vladimiro Miranda in power systems, so we decided to visit the institute”, he explains.

The professor from PolyU seemed pleased to see that “in addition to energy, there are many other areas that the two institutes have in common which means that we can go even further in our cooperation”. In fact, Siu-Lau Ho added that, “we are already encouraging dialogue between our researchers and so we hope that shortly we will be able to arrange student exchanges and joint research projects”.

With regard to INESC TEC, the professor noted that it is “an important institute on a research level and the aim of both institutes [INESC TEC and PolyU] is not just to publish work. We want to go further and commercialise our research”. And at INESC TEC, “researchers work with people, industry and commerce in an attempt to use their research in the most effective way. This is also one of our main goals. It makes no sense to conduct research that has no practical application”, he concludes.
