INESC TEC Robotics wins two awards

The Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) at INESC TEC, coordinated by INESC Porto, continues to win points with its technology. The winning project this time was Intelwheels (A Smart Wheelchair with a Flexible Multi-mode Interface). The project won two prizes during the International Day for People with Disabilities: The Inclusion Award in the “Applied Research” category and first place in the Honourable Mentions for the Being Able Award - Research and Technology 2011 from the Salvador Association.

This project aims to develop a Smart Wheelchair with a flexible multi-mode interface to improve the quality of life of those with motor disabilities. Users can use voice commands, facial expressions, head movements and a joystick or even all of these methods together.

This project is led by Luís Paulo Reis from the Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Laboratory (LIACC). Researchers from ROBIS, António Paulo Moreira (Unit coordinator) and PhD student, Marcelo Petry, will also be participating along with Brígida Faria from the Higher Education Technology and Health School in Porto and Sérgio Vasconcelos from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).

The first of the two prizes was presented as part of the International Day for People with Disabilities at the second Inclusion Gala that took place on 3rd December 2011. The event was organised by the Centre of Resources for Digital Inclusion (CRID) at the Higher Education School of Education and Social Sciences from the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, with support from the Town Council of Leiria.
