REBORN, BUT NOT FROM ASHES
INESC was born in Lisbon in 1980. The idea was to build something that would shorten the path from university to industry, from science to application. Portugal seriously needed a refreshing (some would say revolutionary) concept in its march towards industrialisation. INESC was born-again in 1985; it was released from its narrow confines when the two major Portuguese Universities (Lisbon and Porto) joined forces to transform it into a national entity.

TriMARES wins award in golden year for Robotics at INESC TEC
Since its formation in 1993 and its first official intervention in various areas, such as Robotic Football and aquatic robotics, the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit at INESC TEC (ROBIS) has become one of the units with the largest growth index at the Associate Laboratory.

INESC TEC closes year with food from around the world
On 16th December 2011 INESC TEC celebrated the year with festive foods and flavours from around the world. Once again, collaborators from various different cultures were invited to share delicacies from their countries with their colleagues. Part of the festivities included paying homage to José Ruela, the coordinator of the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), celebrating those put in the Limelight this year and awarding prizes for the Photography contest “Holidays 2011”. With the turnout beating last year’s record, this party took Inesqians on a journey of favours around the world of INESC TEC. The Communication Service would like to thank everyone that participated and wish you all a very Happy New Year!

INESC TEC develops wireless swimming costume to monitor swimmers
INESC TEC, in partnership with the University of Minho and the Faculty of Sports of the University of Porto, have developed training equipment that allows competitive coaches and swimmers to measure their biometric parameters and performance to improve their knowledge and gain better results.

INESC TEC concludes European project on electric mobility
The final meeting for project MERGE, with INESC Porto as the scientific leader, took place on 14th and 15th December 2011 in Dublin, hosted by ESB (Electricity Supply Board – Ireland’s Premier Electricity Utility).

Hong Kong Delegation visits INESC Porto
Vladimiro Miranda, Director of INESC Porto, presented the institution to the Hong Kong Delegation, introducing the research areas in which INESC TEC (coordinated by INESC Porto) works with particular focus on electrical energy. The representatives from the delegation were Siu-Lau Ho, the Director of the Department of Electrical Engineering and he presented PolyU and Zhao Xu, a Professor in Energy who presented the research at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the same University.

INESC TEC develops consumer profiles in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Power System Unit (USE) at INESC TEC has signed a contract to provide advanced consulting in the implementation of a Load Research programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). This contract was a result of a request from the Advanced Engineering Associates International.

The Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit at INESC TEC will be organising the 13th edition of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference (ISMIR 2012) that will take place at the São Bento da Vitória Monastery in Porto between 8th and 12th October 2012.

INESC TEC Robotics wins two awards
The Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) at INESC TEC, coordinated by INESC Porto, continues to win points with its technology. The winning project this time was Intelwheels (A Smart Wheelchair with a Flexible Multi-mode Interface). The project won two prizes during the International Day for People with Disabilities: The Inclusion Award in the “Applied Research” category and first place in the Honourable Mentions for the Being Able Award - Research and Technology 2011 from the Salvador Association.

The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit at INESC TEC was awarded the GAPI-CTCP prize – Technology Innovation 2011 for the second year running.
