Retail sales can go up by 21%
The future of the retail industry will involve the use of RFID (radio frequency identification) technology, which makes it possible to optimise the retail cycle management. It was based on this technology that the platform ‘CreativeRetail’ was created, and it not only improves customer satisfaction, but also increases sales between 4 and 21% in stores or store chains. The CreativeRetail was developed by Creativesystems, together with INESC TEC.

INESC TEC adopts output evaluation model of the European Space Agency
In order to evaluate the technology readiness of its scientific outputs, as part of the FCT’s evaluation, which took place in late 2014, INESC TEC has adopted the model of the European Space Agency. This model uses a scale of TRL – Technology Readiness Levels, which define the maturity of technology developed within each R&D project, always aiming to transfer technology to the market.

FCT rates INESC TEC as “Excellent”
After the second evaluation stage of R&D Units, conducted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), INESC TEC was rated as "Excellent", obtaining a score of 24 points (out of 25). As a result, INESC TEC will be receiving almost 2.6 million euros/year.

INESC TEC is part of Raw Materials Consortium of European Institute of Innovation and Technology
INESC TEC was recently selected by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) to join the Raw Materials consortium. INESC TEC is the sole Portuguese research centre to be part of this team. Three years after creating the Knowledge Innovation Communities (KICs) for the areas of climate change, renewable energy and ICT, Raw Materials are the new challenge of EIT, in which Portugal is represented by INESC TEC.

INESC TEC integrates Portuguese consortium that will bring companies and European services closer
INES TEC is part of a new consortium, the Enterprise Europe Network – Portugal (EEN-Portugal), where the goal is to provide information and consulting services to companies in Europe. The idea is to promote business opportunities and cooperation, and participations in RDI projects, as well as provide access to new markets, with about 600 points of contact in over 50 countries.

Project CARLoS originates first prototype of mobile manipulating robot
Between 11 and 12 November, INESC TEC hosted the first integration workshop on project CARLoS (CooperAtive Robot for Large Spaces manufacturing), where the goal is to develop a mobile manipulating robot for fit-out and coating applications, or to be used inside superstructure blocks in ships.

INESC TEC helps Kyaia install prototype that manufactures shoes pair by pair
Did you know that you can now order a customised pair of shoes online and have it on your doorstep in 24 hours? Thanks to a partnership between technology-based companies and R&D institutions, including INESC TEC, the technology makes it possible to produce footwear units, and is now installed at Kyaia, in Guimarães. The new solution to produce customised footwear in 24 hours was developed as part of the HighSpeedShoeFactory (Model to Produce Customised Footwear) project, and changes the way the footwear industry operates.

INESC TEC researchers develop Bragg network using innovative methods
Now that 20 years have passed since Francisco Araújo, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP), developed the first Bragg network in April 1994 (see Figure 1), the CAP researchers Paulo Marques (coordinator) and Daniel Alexandre fabricated the first Bragg network using a femtosecond laser (impulses lasting 200x10-15s, that is, one millionth of one billionth of a second), purchased recently as part of the BEST CASE (Figure 2) project.

Matthew Davies, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), was appointed associate editor of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing. Matthew Davies is now one of the members of the editorial board that will be coordinating the publication of this journal on audio, speech and language processing over the next three years.

Workshop discusses network of suppliers for the aeronautics industry
