INESC TEC researchers win Best Paper Award

The INESC TEC researchers Pedro Strecht (Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering - CESE), Carlos Soares (CESE) and João Moreira (Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support – LIAAD) received a Best Paper Award for their paper "Merging Decision Trees: a case study in predicting student performance".

This work is part of a case study on the performance of students at the University of Porto and its goal is two-fold: to develop a model per curricular unit to predict the success of students, and to combine these models to generate knowledge to support decisions (for the managers of degrees and programmes), with different levels of granularity according to the decision-maker.

This study is being conducted as part of Pedro Strecht’s doctoral programme in computer engineering (PRODEI) and project BI4UP-X, where the goal is to develop tools based on data to support the management of the University of Porto. This project is being developed by INESC TEC, represented by CESE, LIAAD and the Centre for Industrial Management and Engineering (CEGI).

The paper was awarded during the 10th International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Applications (ADMA 2014), which took place in Guilin (China), between 19 and 21 December.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this article are associated with the following institutions: FEUP and INESC TEC.
