FCT rates INESC TEC as “Excellent”

After the second evaluation stage of R&D Units, conducted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), INESC TEC was rated as "Excellent", obtaining a score of 24 points (out of 25). As a result, INESC TEC will be receiving almost 2.6 million euros/year.

These results are proof, once again, of the recognition of the institution’s work, and will now make it possible to “plan the activities for the next five years with some safety”, reveals the President of INESC TEC, José Manuel Mendonça.

This score was awarded following the visit of a panel of evaluators to INESC TEC, on 8 October, and for that reason the President addressed “a thank you to all members of INESC TEC in general for their commitment to designing the strategy, to creating the narrative, the presentations, and demonstrations that have led to this result, with a special reference to Vladimiro Miranda [Director of INESC TEC] and José Carlos Príncipe [President of INESC TEC’s Scientific Advisory Board], for their fundamental role”, states José Manuel Mendonça.

Of the 322 R&D centres evaluated, 11 were rated as “Exceptional” and 52 as “Excellent”. As of 2015 (and until 2020), 257 scientific research institutions will be receiving 71 million euros annually, 66% of which (47 million euros) will be given to the top-rated units. The evaluation promoted by the FCT to national institutions will leave out 65 of the 322 units evaluated.
