Have your say

"...it seems particularly important to me that INESC TEC has a wide range of areas under the same roof and a significant number of people from different nationalities: even someone with a PhD in music feels right at home!", Rui Penha (CTM)

Free Nonsense

"In May 2014 I started working at INESC TEC and on 16 October around 3.47 pm, Adi Shamir gave me two cough drops.", André Pereira (CRACS)

Limelight

Every month, this section will honour a collaborator for an exceptional contribution in his/her area of activity. BIP’s Editors will have the final choice. However, the cooperation of every Unit Coordinator is precious since they will be the ones suggesting which collaborator should be distinguished.

José Iria

José Iria (CPES) – November 2014

The Coordinator of the Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES) stated: “José Iria is a young researcher and PhD student who has been working on demand management, including the integration of electric vehicles in electricity distribution networks. He has worked in FCT projects and direct contracts with industry partners. He participated actively in two of these contracts with industry – one recently concluded and the other ongoing – and played a fundamental role in defining and specifying software solutions to manage load and to monitor and control distribution networks. He is extremely dedicated, always with a great sense of responsibility, and after devoting many hours to the project he obtained high quality results.”

Miguel Matos

Miguel Matos (HASLab) – December 2014

The Coordinator of the High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) stated: “Miguel was doctoral student at HASLab, having concluded his PhD in late 2013, after which he became a postdoctoral researcher. Miguel has been instrumental to the research of the distributed systems group, both in planning and executing the group’s strategy. Without ever disregarding fundamental research, in which he became a renowned expert (algorithms for epidemic dissemination of data), he has also been co-supervising master’s students, and helping doctoral students. Most importantly, both at HASLab and INESC TEC, he is known as Mr. LeanBigData. LeanBigData is a European project in which INESC TEC is partner, and Miguel is responsible for making sure that all commitments to the project are met well and on time, and he demonstrated that once again at the project meeting that took place at INESC TEC last November.”

Sérgio Tafula

Sérgio Tafula (C-BER) – January

The Coordinators of the Centre for Biological Engineering Research (C-BER) stated: "Sérgio is one of the most important members of C-BER as he is responsible for managing information and support systems used by the centre’s researchers. Moreover, he is also a researcher working on some of the most important projects in this young INESC TEC Centre. An example of that is the paper he co-wrote for a high impact journal (ISI IF=6.132)."

Rui Campos and Eduardo Marques

Rui Campos and Eduardo Marques (CTM) – January

The Coordinators of the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (UTM) stated: "We would like to nominate the team led by Eduardo Marques, Rui Campos and Artur Pimenta Alves* to the Limelight section. This team has successfully prepared and carried out the 1st edition of CMT’s Researcher-Entrepreneur Competition, which originated three innovative projects, proposed by CTM researchers and involving undergraduate students. The regulation and selection process created by this team have been, in our opinion, well defined, and can be used in the future by other INESC TEC Centres."

*Professor Pimenta Alves was part of the team responsible for organising the competition. Although his name is mentioned by the Coordinators, he cannot be part of the “Limelight” section because, according to the rules Directors and Coordinators, cannot be nominated.
