Statement about the Project
The goal with project ONLINE-GYM, conducted in partnership with INESC TEC and with funding from Portugal Telecom Innovation (Altice Labs), was to develop a 3D online platform to practice fitness activities in groups using the Internet. As an exploratory research project, the final goal was to validate concepts and emerging technologies, such as interaction by motion detection without using markers. The result was a prototype, subjected to tests with pilot users, which was demonstrated as part of a health technology workshop at INESC TEC. In this demonstration, new opportunities and ideas arose, including a project which is already being prepared. We believe that this project was very successful and provided very valuable results, including the expansion of knowledge to the well-being area and the range of new development lines in the area of remote rehabilitation.
The goal with InMerse, an experimental project in partnership with INESC TEC, was to study the potential use of natural interaction techniques and devices, augmented and virtual reality, in two types of immersive scenarios: entertainment and professional. For this purpose, two demonstrators were built for two different applications: a virtual reality installation in game format, and a digital signage prototype for interaction via gestures. The main result of project InMerse, which was unquestionably successful, was a public library and the generation of know-how relating to specific applications of these emerging technologies, with great potential to generate value.
As long-standing partners, our experience working with INESC TEC has always been extremely satisfying and rewarding. Throughout this extensive partnership with INESC TEC, we’ve had the opportunity to work in close collaboration with teams formed by high quality researchers.
We at Altice Labs believe that when opportunities arise for new exploratory research projects in INESC TEC’s areas of expertise, we will certainly be looking forward to new partnerships, as INESC TEC is to us a privileged partner.
