"When there is a team that is capable of representing the Centre with commitment and seriousness while at the same time being in a good mood, the conditions for success are met." Henrique and João (CPES)

Serious Thinking

"Recent scandals may have undermined social networks’ reliability, but it is up to each one of us, its users, to ensure the veracity and credibility of what is published, to use and misuse of accuracy, which is so characteristic of the scientific method, in order to promote science." Eunice Oliveira (SCOM)

INESC TEC’s photonics area awarded at AOP 2019

Between 31 May and 4 June of 2019, three papers developed by researchers of INESC TEC'S Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP) were distinguished at the AOP 2019 conference – IV International Conference on Applications in Optics and Photonics, which was held in Lisbon.

Duarte Viveiros was distinguished with the award “SPIE Certificate of Excellence for second place student presentation” for the paper “Fabrication of periodic structures in optical fibers by femtosecond laser micromachining for sensing applications”. The paper presents a fabrication system using the femtosecond laser for the development of periodic structures (Bragg networks) in single mode optical fibres and in coreless special fibres. The paper explores the advantages of the fabrication of the Bragg networks in optical fibres with the femtosecond laser in the development of optical fibre sensors for high temperatures.

Duarte Viveiros is a PhD student at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) and is being supervised by Paulo Marques and Pedro Jorge, who are also integral elements of CAP.

On the other hand, researcher André Gomes, who is also a PhD student at FCUP, was distinguished with the award SPIE Certificate of Excellence for third place student presentation” for the paper “Enhanced Temperature Sensing with Vernier Effect on Fiber Probe based on Multimode Fabry-Perot Interferometer”. This paper aims at carrying out small-scaled measurements, namely in biological and medical environments, where the integration of miniaturised sensors that are adapted to the measurement site is important. Being supervised by Orlando Frazão, who is also a collaborator of CAP, this paper allowed the development of a temperature sensor in a tapered multimode optical fibre, using the technique focused ion beam milling.

Finally, the award “Best Student Poster Award” was given to Catarina Monteiro for her paper presented in a poster format entitled ”3D prototyping of a fiber Bragg grating vibration sensor for power transformers”. In this paper, two optical fibre sensors were developed using 3D impression, which allow the detection of vibrations with frequencies of up to 250 Hz. The application of these sensors in power transformers to detect vibration allows to predict and to tackle possible damages to the structure, thus reducing the possibility of failures in the energy distribution system. The award was given by the Student Chapter of OSA of the University of Aveiro and by SPOF – Portuguese Society of Optics and Photonics. Catarina Monteiro, a PhD student at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), is being supervised by Orlando Frazão and Susana Silva, elements of CAP.
