José Carlos Príncipe receives IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award

José Carlos Príncipe, President of the Scientific Advisory Board at INESC Porto, was recently awarded the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Neural Networks Pioneer award. The award will be presented on August 3rd in a gala dinner for the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN 2011) in San Jose (California, USA).

This award recognises two types of pioneering contributions: fundamental understanding and engineering application, made at least 15 years prior to the award date. This Neural Networks Pioneer Award is considered annually, and is given to an individual who contributed to the advancement of theory, technologies, and/or applications of neural networks by inventing new technologies, creating innovative technical developments, implementing new products, or managing innovative product design or production processes.

José Carlos Príncipe sees this award as “a great honour because the most important international founders of Computational Intelligence in the last 20 years are among the previous candidates”.

In addition to his work with INESC Porto, José Carlos Príncipe is a professor at the University of Florida (USA) and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). In 2007 he also received an IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Career Achievement Award from the Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
