INESC Porto supports sustainable strategies for cities
The Power Systems Unit (USE) at INESC Porto will take part in the European project, "Design of a decision support tool for sustainable, reliable and cost-effective energy strategies in cities and industrial complexes (CitInES)". Project CitInEs is part of the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme that aims to develop tools to support cities and industry when making decisions regarding the planning of power systems.
The main aim of the project is to promote a sustainable future for Europe in terms of energy consumption by providing the tools that assess the interaction between the various energy carriers on different scales. The project will evaluate the impact of urban planning strategies and investment decisions, looking at economic, financial and environment factors. CitInEs aims to optimise the local energy strategy and will include using renewable energy, electric mobility. The project will also coordinate the different energy carriers, develop smart girds and supply management, and evaluate the financial and environmental risks in order to propose robust strategies to address uncertainties with fuel prices.
The project is coordinated by 11 partners including INESC Porto, ARTELYS (project leader), AIT, CMA-Armines, Schneider Electric and TUPRAS and the cities of Bologna and Cesana.
The meeting to begin the project will be in Paris in September 2011. Yannick Phulpin (USE) will coordinate INESC Porto’s participation in the project.
