INESC Porto wins a Novo Norte Award

INESC Porto’s strategic programme for technological empowerment and internationalisation (CATAI) won the Innovative North (Norte Innovador) category for the prestigious Novo Norte (“New North”) awards run by the North Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N) and the Jornal de Notícias.

These awards are meant to recognize every year the outstanding activity or projects of organizations from the North of Portugal, in the area of science, technology and innovation.

The main objectives of the winning project were to consolidate Portugal’s international status, develop technology with the potential for export and create jobs through the development of science that focuses on the integration of renewable energy sources, namely wind power.

Sustainability and energy efficiency form the basis of CATAI that was recently awarded the “Innovative North” award at the Novo Norte award ceremony.

This programme coincides with INESC Porto’s mission and aimed to develop technological, market-oriented solutions to create a more sustainable and economic model. This project therefore addresses global issues, such as reducing greenhouse gases and increasing the integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity grid.

INESC Porto’s status as a leading institute in power systems, can be seen through its long standing partnerships with companies such as EFACEC (an international company in the electricity sector), EDP (one of Europe’s major electricity operators) and has provided consultancy services for countries such as Brazil, Hungary, Spain, Greece, Cape Verde, Venezuela and the USA. Furthermore, INESC Porto incubated two technology based spin-off companies in the energy sector creating 15 high-tech jobs for the region.
