EISCO 2012 discusses Open Government and the DLA at the Vale do Ave

The EISCO 2012 - European Information Society Conference will take place between 12 and 14 November, in Guimarães, Portugal. This European conference will promote the discussion on eGovernment practices and strategies associated with the Information Society.

The EISCO 2012 will be an ideal opportunity to promote the Digital Local Agenda (DLA) for European regions, presenting case studies and methodologies that support its implementation.

This year's edition is supported by INESC TEC and will address topics such as electronic participation of citizens in governance processes and decision-making, digital empowerment of government and citizens, open data or cloud computing. The workshops will feature senior managers and executives of European local and regional authorities and various experts such as Martín Álvarez-Espinar, of the World Wide Web Consortium – W3C, who will be the speaker in the session devoted to the main theme of the conference "Open government", and Paulo Calçada, the president at EuroCloud Portugal, who will be addressing the topic of "Cloud Computing ", among others.

This is the first time that Portugal will be hosting this conference. The choice of the Vale do Ave and Guimarães regions to host the event was not random and is justified by the fact that this region was the first to receive the concept of Digital Region - "Vale do Ave Digital Region". Furthermore, it is adequate as this year Guimarães is the European Capital of Culture. Organising EISCO is fundamental to promote the strategy to modernise the services provided to citizens and businesses, and to improve the citizens' quality of life.

The public administration will also be strongly represented in this edition by the ANAFRE - Associação Nacional de Freguesias (National Association of Parishes). Case studies will also be presented for inclusion in the Parishes which act as intermediaries in the use of Public Administration electronic services by digitally excluded citizens.

The conference is co-organised by the AMAVE - Association of Municipalities of the Vale do Ave and by the European Network ELANET (European Local Authorities' Telematic Network). The event is locally supported by INESC TEC. The EISCO 2012 is funded by the ON.2 (O Novo Norte) Programme, the NSRF (National Strategic Reference Framework and the European Union) and the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund).
