INESC TEC hosts Delegation from Petrobras

On 4th and 5th January INESC TEC hosted a delegation from the Research Centre (CENPES) from the Brazilian oil company, Petrobras. The aim of the visit was to get to know the various areas of research that INESC TEC works in to form links between the two institutions.

The delegation was composed of Louise Pereira Ribeiro, Head of Technology for Aquatic Equipment at CENPES, Remo Zauli Machado Filho, Senior Consultant in Technology for Aquatic Equipment at CENPES, Mauricio Galassi, Junior Engineer in Operations and Logistics Optimisation Technology at CENPES and Joel Vieira dos Santos Júnior, a Submarine Engineer for E&P.

In addition to visiting the INESC TEC facilities, the delegation also visited the Robotics Laboratory where they attended demonstrations and tests with prototypes. The optical fibre sensor laboratories at the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) were a must for the representatives at Petrobras and there they had the opportunity to discuss and identify points of interest and the requirements for sensors that monitor structural weaknesses in ships, positioning and navigation. A visit to Fibersensing was the last port of call for the delegation that is also preparing for a workshop that will take place in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

BIP – How did the invitation for this visit come about?

Louise Ribeiro - The invitation was the result of a previous visit to INESC Porto by the Director of Petrobras and the President of Galp looking at Exploration and Production. During this visit the Director of Petrobras identified great potential for joint projects. We belong to the research centre (CENPES) at Petrobras and we decided to visit to get to know the institute better and create links.

BIP – What was the aim of this visit?

LR - To see how you work, to see which are the most strategic projects and to identify future opportunities. We will probably organise more meetings to plan a technical meeting in Brazil to see if we can establish long-term projects with INESC TEC.

BIP – What potential can you see in INESC TEC?

LR - We already had some areas in mind, for example there is great potential in robotics. We are also interested in optical fibre sensors and the fabrication of optical fibre Bragg gratings but they still need to develop further. First we wanted to look and then will be able to think about applying this technology. INESC TEC has not worked with the petrol or gas industry before, so there is a lot to learn. First we need to look in detail to see how these areas can be applied to industry. INESC TEC has the knowledge but it will have to customise it for industry.

BIP – Was the visit a success?

LR - The visit was very positive and INESC TEC is an excellent place. I think it was extremely positive both in terms of the people and the knowledge.
