Where are you now?

Every month INESC TEC sends highly qualified individuals into the market. These individuals often then go on to occupy important positions in some of the best national and international companies or they opt to form spin-offs. As the best way to perform technology transfer is through individuals, this section is dedicated to collaborators that trained at INESC TEC and now star in other companies and institutions.

João Sousa

João Sousa, Prewind, Lda, Manager

  • Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2006 - 2009
  • Unit(s) at INESC TEC where you worked: Power Systems Unit (USE)
  • Name(s) of project(s) you were involved in: PREVEOL, EPREV, INOVGRID, GAREER

My time at INESC Porto [the coordinating entity of INESC TEC] was an inspiring experience as it gave me access to a set of ambitious and high quality projects which have enriched my scientific, professional, ethical and moral knowledge.

Other than the projects I had the privilege to work on, INESC Porto helped me create two spin-off companies: Smartwatt and Prewind. Having said that, I would like to encourage INESC Porto collaborators to turn their scientific projects into companies, namely those projects which can easily penetrate international markets.

In my opinion, INESC Porto has not only grown exponentially, and internationally as well, but is also promoting a larger collaboration and cooperation between its research Units. As a result, the Institute has managed to achieve better results in solving current and future problems, taking advantage of its multidisciplinary knowledge.

  • Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2006-2007
  • Units at INESC TEC where you worked: Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP)
  • Name(s) of project(s) you were involved in: DURIT and RCED

My experience at INESC Porto [the coordinating entity of INESC TEC] supports a significant part of my professional career, not only in terms of the knowledge that I have gained, but also in terms of the contact network it gave me. The work I’m doing now is closely related to some of the Institute’s areas of expertise. It is also worth highlighting that one of my PhD supervisors is professor Jorge Pinho de Sousa, manager at INESC TEC’s Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP).

I believe that the diversity of projects and knowledge at UESP provides an enriching work/research environment, which consequently favours individual growth. INESC Porto is still my “database” when I am searching for and supporting knowledge.

I consider that over the last years INESC Porto has managed to become more dynamic and open to new collaborations. Furthermore, the Institute has succeeded to confirm its excellence in some of its areas of expertise and new Units have been created to broaden these areas. Finally, I believe that the Institute is much better in terms of outward communication, and so it is easier to be informed on the projects developed at the Institute.

  • Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2008 – 2010
  • Unit(s) at INESC TEC where you worked: Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT)
  • Name(s) of project(s) you were involved in: FADIS – SGIDI (NP4457)

INESC Porto [the coordinating entity of INESC TEC], as well as FEUP [Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto], were fundamental for me to understand a new reality which was still not clear: the importance of SMEs for the national development. Furthermore, I was able to understand how they are a fundamental tool to apply knowledge to promote innovation, an aspect which is fundamental for businesses to last.

I live in Brazil and due to the distance it is hard for me to a have a clear understanding of what is happening at INESC Porto. However, what I can understand is that the institution, facing the economic crisis in Europe, plays without a shadow of doubt an increasingly important and fundamental role in developing technology and innovation.

Another area that has improved greatly at INESC Porto is communication. I have some experience with organisational communication because I have worked at other multinationals in the past and I must say that at INESC Porto that is an area that bravely puts into practice some aspects that are applied by many, but only done effectively by some.

Creating a network of former employees [CONNECT INESC TEC] is another example of that. I would like to congratulate the Communication Service and I will certainly take advantage of the opportunity of belonging to this network.
