2012 UTEN Conference

What are the future guidelines for supporting the creation of innovative companies and for converting research results into new products and services – this question set the tone for the 2012 UTEN Conference "Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer: building Portugal’s future", which took place at Lispolis (Lisbon), on 17 December 2012. José Manuel Mendonça, President of INESC Porto, is also the Scientific Director of UTEN.

Researchers and students, entrepreneurs and investors, industry players and strategic decision-makers were invited to discuss the future of Portugal in these two areas. The conference programme focused on four main themes: the journey of an entrepreneur, internationalisation to the American market, the creation of an "entrepreneurial" economy and Technology Transfer networks.

This year, the Conference UTEN 2012 featured a panel of excellence, which included top experts from the United States and from Europe. Participants included entrepreneurs such as Gary Hoover (Founder of companies Bookstop, Hoover's Inc., TravelFest and Story Stores), Vinit Nijhawan (Taral Networks, Kinetic Computer, Payload Systems), Laura A. Schoppe (President of Fuentek, LLC and one of the top 25 business women in the Research Triangle Park region of North Carolina) and William Stevens (Europe Unlimited and one of the promoters of EASDAQ, which later became Nasdaq Europe). The event also featured testimonies from three Portuguese entrepreneurs Helena Vieira (BIOALVO), João Barros (Veniam) and Pedro Pissarra (Biotecnol).

Representatives of the Institute for Innovation and Technology Transfer of Nuevo Leon, Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University, IC2 Institute, University of Texas at Austin and UNU-MERIT also participated actively in the 2012 UTEN Conference, sharing experiences on how to enhance entrepreneurship and economic growth of a region.

The power of collaborative networks in promoting technology transfer and entrepreneurship will be discussed by representatives of the top RedEmprendia, the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and ProTon Europe.

Leonor Parreira, Secretary of State for Science and Higher Education, Carlos Oliveira, Secretary of State for Entrepreneurship, Competitiveness and Innovation, João Guerreiro, Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities and dean of the University of Algarve, and Miguel Seabra, president of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) have also participated in the event.
