INESC TEC publishes record number of scientific papers

INESC TEC, with its close to 700 researchers, from which 230 have a PhD degree, continues to maintain a high level of excellence in the science and technology produced. Proof of that is the exponential increase in the publication of scientific papers.

Between 2011 and 2012, INESC TEC's researchers published 1733 papers, 477 of which in international journals. Over a thousand represent presentations in international top scientific meetings.

INESC TEC’s Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) had the highest absolute value per capita, publishing one hundred papers in international journals. The Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) came second in terms of absolute numbers and was the winner in terms of papers presented in conferences (222).

The numbers, communicated to the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in INESC TEC’s annual report, broke a record in INESC TEC’s history. Publications in international journals and conferences alone (1493 papers) represent more than double the number registered in the previous biennium 2009/2010 (611 papers). While there was an increase in the numbers of PhDs at INESC TEC, it is also true that the scientific production per capita increased as well. This confirms a continuous progression in productivity, which should be measured from the perspective of the Associate Laboratory’s areas of intervention and knowledge on the electric and computing domains.

INESC TEC continues to produce scientific knowledge intensively, but the quality of the work is high as well. The awards given to papers by INESC TEC researchers over the last year, compiled in the previous edition of BIP, are proof of that.
