CISTER/INESC TEC starts European project on embedded systems
The Research Centre in Real-Time and Embedded Computing Systems (CISTER), an Associate Unit of INESC TEC, has recently started working on a European Artemis project in the area of embedded systems. The aim of the project is to address the technical and application challenges associated with the cooperation between different types of systems. The Arrowhead aims at facilitating the interoperation between millions of devices that will become the embedded systems of the future, defining interfaces and mechanisms which can be applied to several areas.
The technology can be applied in different domains, whether in the areas of energy, industry, electrical mobility or smart cities. The aim is to facilitate the interaction between people and devices, and between devices themselves. “The Arrowhead technology will make it possible, for instance, to easily integrate systems to intelligently control lighting during the night, turning on the lamps only when a person is detected in that area”, explains Luís Ferreira, the researcher coordinating the project at CISTER. “Upon arriving to their electric cars, the users will find that the vehicles are fully charged, thus taking advantage of the lower energy tariffs at night”, adds Michele Albano, a guest researcher at CISTER.
The Arrowhead started on 1 March and the kick-off meeting took place in Brussels on the 14th of the same month. All project partners attended the meeting to discuss the fundamental goals and tasks to be developed. CISTER will be responsible for defining the methodologies to design the interfaces between components, as well as for the interoperability architecture for the global solution. The Associate Unit will also be participating in two demonstration pilots: one related to energy virtual markets and another on smart buildings.
The project involves 73 European partners, companies and research centres known worldwide for their role in embedded systems. The project duration is four years and the budget is approximately 70 million Euros.
The Arrowhead is the first Artemis Innovation Pilot Project (AIPP) to be developed as part of the strategic programme ARTEMIS (Advanced Research & Technology for EMbedded Intelligence and Systems). The Artemis programme is a joint initiative of the European Commission, of the member states and industry for the execution of a strategic R&TD strategy in Europe on embedded systems. The aim with the AIPP is to reinforce and demonstrate the programme’s R&D activities by promoting synergies between different areas of application, thus promoting critical mass for research and project demonstrations.
