INESC TEC takes Internet to the waters of the Atlantic
INESC TEC has joined the “Porto Digital” Association (APD) to provide free broadband Internet throughout the coast between the cities of Porto and Póvoa de Varzim. INESC TEC and the APD have signed a collaboration protocol as part of the 2013 Sea Fair and the aim is to provide the service in 2014. Mare-Fi is the name of the system created by INESC TEC and it is already installed at the Edifício Transparente in Porto. The system will be testing the wireless communication with the fishing boats in the port of Matosinhos. This is a pioneer project in the world that, at a later stage, will grant Internet access up to five nautical miles (about nine kilometres).

INESC TEC develops 1st Portuguese eco-efficiency software
INESC TEC developed, together with Ecoinside, FEUP and ISA, an IT management platform for eco-efficiency in industrial units that monitors consumptions of energy, water and other resources. Furthermore, in order to suggest more efficient solutions, the platform also measures gas emissions and wastes resulting from manufacturing. The Ecoplanner is now being tested at Sorgal, one of the largest animal feed producing companies in Portugal.

Newly inaugurated Clean Room will enhance INESC TEC’s research on optical fibres
On 12 June, the Micro and Nanofabrication Unit of the Centre of Materials, University of Porto (NMTEC/CEMUP), an infrastructure dedicated to research on materials, inaugurated a new Clean Room. INESC TEC has been a partner of CEMUP and will be one of clean room’s main users.

INESC TEC supplies second robot to Brazil
INESC TEC has just supplied another underwater robot to Brazil, following the partnership with the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) which in 2011 led to the supply of robot TriMARES to monitor the Lajeado dam and the respective reservoir in that South American country.

INESC TEC develops apps to support Manufacturing Systems Engineering
INESC TEC’s Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) is working on the European project APPS4aME – Engineering Apps for advanced Manufacturing Engineering, where the purpose is to develop a set of apps to support Manufacturing Systems Engineering in order to increase productivity and reliability in small series.

INESC TEC develops cardiovascular monitoring system
The Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) of INESC TEC has recently kicked-off project SIVIC - Portable Integrated System for Cardiovascular Monitoring, which aims to develop a wearable device for monitoring coronary and heart conditions. More specifically, this device will monitor electrocardiograms (ECG) and the state of stent-grafts (endografts) after EVAR (endovascular aneurysm repair) procedures.

INESC TEC and PT Inovação develop 3D online gym prototype
INESC TEC has recently started project “Online Gym”, in partnership with Portugal Telecom Inovação, and the purpose is to develop an online 3D platform that encourages people to exercise in groups on the Internet. Other than promoting the practice of sports, the project will also help people socialise as individuals from different locations will be able to contact with each other. As a result, the project promotes physical and mental well-being.

INESC TEC develops platform to manage hospitals
INESC TEC’s Industrial Engineering and Management Unit (UGEI) has developed the HOBE platform (Benchmarking for Portuguese Hospitals) where the aim is to provide national hospitals with a tool to support their evaluation. With this tool it is possible to compare hospitals online.

INESC TEC has recently started European project FOCUS (Advances in Forestry Automation and Control Systems in Europe), in the area of technology management and forestry control, involving two INESC TEC Units – the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) and the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS).

INESC TEC takes robots to Italy
From 15 to 19 June, members of INESC TEC’s Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) travelled to NATO’s Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), in La Spezia, Italy, to participate in a set of tests as part of project ICARUS (Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations).

INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE), represented by João Peças Lopes and Luís Seca, participated in a meeting of project SuSTAINABLE, which took place on 26 June at the facilities of the University of Manchester, UK. The purpose of this meeting was to define the architecture for the project and to assess the main tasks developed within the first three months of the project.

INESC TEC researcher receives IEEE award
Jean Sumaili, researcher at INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE), has received the 2010 award for best PhD dissertation on Power Systems presented at an Italian university. The IEEE PES Italian Chapter 2010 Best PhD Thesis in Power Engineering AWARD was awarded to the dissertation “Current Decomposition-Based Loss Partitioning and Loss Allocation in Distribution Systems”.

Fabien Gouyon, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was awarded as part of the international competition “Reproducibility in Audio and Music Research”, promoted by the SoundSoftware.ac.uk service. The results were announced on 26 June.

A team of nine researchers, four of which from INESC TEC, led by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) was the winner of the Filtering task at the data mining competition RepLab 2013, which took place between 15 April and 27 May.

On 5 July, INESC TEC welcomed a delegation from the Institut de Recherce en Energie Solaire et en Energies Nouvelle (IRESEN) from Rabat, Morocco. The visit took place after the IRESEN showed interest in INESC TEC’s areas of expertise. The goal is for both institutions to collaborate in projects in the future.
