Have your say

"When I arrived at FEUP [Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto] about a year and a half ago I created a new R&D group called BRAIN (Biomedical Research And INnovation), which has now joined INESC TEC", João Paulo Cunha (BRAIN)

Free Nonsense

INESC TEC organises international conference on Automation and Manufacturing

About 200 experts from all over the world came to the city of Porto to discuss the future of the manufacturing industry at the International Conference on Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing (FAIM 2013).

Considered the main international forum to disseminate the most relevant and recent research, theory and practices in Automation and Manufacturing, the FAIM 2013 took place between 26 and 28 June, in Porto. This event was organised by INESC TEC, with the support of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).

The focus was on Engelbert Westkamper of the Fraunhofer Institute (Germany) and one of the most important decision-makers in the European and German manufacturing industries. At the conference, Engelbert Westkamper presented the strategic lines for the sector in 2030. José C. Caldeira (INESC TEC, Portugal), who discussed the role played by clusters in increasing competitiveness in the manufacturing industry, and Lihui Wang (Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden), who discussed the challenges of increasing sustainability in this area, were also some of the most important speakers.

The FAIM 2013 Conference also provided practical and specialised workshops on some of the most pressing themes in the manufacturing industry, such as robotics to create intelligent factories, the importance of planning and managing production in an energy efficient way, the importance of LEAN methodologies to improve the efficiency of a factory and the impact of smart data when creating intelligent manufacturing systems. Over the three days of the conference, researchers from all over the world had the opportunity to present innovative work which demonstrate the impact of important areas such as simulation, social media, industrial networks, digital manufacturing systems, quality management, as well as new technologies (RFID, Cloud Computing, and others)  on the sustainable competitiveness of manufacturing systems in the future.
