INESC TEC organises summer school on computer vision and artificial intelligence
From 5 to 12 July, several PhD students, researchers and companies participated in the “VISion Understanding and Machine intelligence (VISUM) Summer School”, the first summer school in this area organised by INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), together with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and the University of Porto.
Considering the existing gap between the most fundamental concepts of computer vision and their application in real world scenarios, the aim with this summer school was to bridge these two key domains. The programme included several sections divided into three areas: fundamental, industrial and application topics, complemented by hands-on sessions and a poster session.
Generally speaking, “the event met our expectations, and the participants’ as well, according to a survey we did”, stated the UTM organising team which includes Jaime Cardoso, Hélder Oliveira, Ana Rebelo and Ana Sequeira. “The effort put into disseminating the event succeeded in bringing 23 students from 13 different countries, and a panel of 10 speakers with a highly relevant resumé, not only academically, but also in terms of research”, they concluded.
Critical Health, S.A., Inovretail and Strong were the three companies that decided to attend this summer school, demonstrating that some of the practices developed and technologies commercialised in these areas have a great industrial potential.
“The summer school gathered worldwide renowned researchers in computer vision, image processing and machine learning, as well as companies that demonstrated how important these areas are to guarantee a competitive advantage in the market”, stated Carlos Pinho, a researcher at UTM.
The organising committee of VISUM was also supported by Ricardo Sousa, a researcher at the Telecommunications Institute, and André Matos, a researcher at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
