INESC TEC participates in project to predict the aesthetic outcomes of breast cancer surgery
INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) is part of a European Consortium that has been working since the beginning of the year on a tool that will predict the aesthetic appearance of breasts after undergoing conservative surgery. Other than being innovative (until now there was no objective tool to assess these results), project PICTURE (Patient Information Combined for the Assessment of Specific Surgical Outcomes in Breast Cancer) focuses on a research area with a clear social impact and for which INESC TEC has already been acknowledged. It is expected that the first results will be available in April 2014.

This year, the LET-In - Laboratory of Technology Companies, a service provided by INESC TEC’s Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT), is celebrating its sixth anniversary. Last year alone, UITT supported the launching of six technology-based companies.

Tomorrow Options increases capital, announces name change and launches in the US
Tomorrow Options, a spin-off company from INESC Porto (the coordinating entity of INESC TEC) and FEUP, has recently announced a venture capital increase of 2.6 million Euros provided by Portugal Ventures, one of Portugal’s largest venture investment firms. At the same time, the company also announced it changed its name to Kinematix (www.kinematix.pt), and launched in the US with a fully-owned US subsidiary in Boston, adding new board members.

In September, INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE) kicked off the European project HYPERBOLE (HYdropower plants PERformance and flexiBle Operation towards Lean integration of new renewable Energies), a project on renewable energies focusing specifically on hydraulic power.

On 1 September, INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE) kicked off a new European project where the goal is to develop tools that will allow the distribution system operators to overcome the challenges inherent to managing power grids with a significant integration of new distributed resources, including microgeneration based on renewable energies and electric vehicles.

LIAAD/INESC TEC in project with Brazilian institution EMBRAPA
Alípio Jorge, Nuno Escudeiro and Bruno Nogueira, researchers at INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), are collaborating with the Brazilian institution Embrapa Informática Agropecuária and the Institute of Mathematical and Computing Science (ICMC) of the University of São Paulo as part of project Critic@ (Compiling and Recovering Technical and Scientific Information and Promoting Knowledge in the AgroHidro network).

INESC TEC starts project on mobile robotics
In September, INESC TEC’s Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) kicked off European project CARLoS – CooperAtive Robot for Large Spaces manufacturing, where the goal is to develop and apply robotics in shipyards. The kick off meeting took place on 12 and 13 September in Vigo, Spain, and was attended by representatives of all partners.

INESC TEC project evaluates lower limb pathologies
In October, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) concluded project PROLIMB – Electronic Sensing for the Prophylaxis of Lower Limb Pathologies. The goal with this project was to create a system to analyse the activity of the lower limbs of humans during gait. The information collected can help doctors make decisions about therapies to adopt, and assess the development of pathologies.

INESC TEC concludes European project on multimedia contents
INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) concluded in October the European project ALICANTE – Media Ecosystem Deployment Through Ubiquitous Content-Aware Network Environments, a project that provides a new concept for accessing multimedia content regardless of the location of the users, including direct transmission of content between users. The final audit of the project took place on 14 October 2013 at CNRS-LaBRI (project leader) in Bordeaux, France, and the evaluation team rated the project as "Good".

On 17 September, INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE) presented the first prototype of a computational tool developed as part of project COORDESEM (Efficient Methodology to Optimally Coordinate Directional Overcurrent Relays in Meshed Power Systems), as part of the 2nd Workshop of the project, which took place at the Companhia de Transmissão de Energia Elétrica Paulista (CTEEP) in São Paulo, Brazil.

INESC TEC researchers win Best Paper Award
Paulo Portugal and Francisco Vasques, researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), won a Best Paper Award as part of the 11th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics (INDIN 2013), which took place between 29 and 31 July in Germany. This is the most important event in Industrial Informatics and one of the most relevant conferences promoted by one of the largest IEEE Societies, the Industrial Electronics Society.

Ana Costa e Silva, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), has recently won an international competition, which took place as part of the 2013 ICDAR conference, in Washington, USA, between 25 and 28 July.

LIAAD/INESC TEC wins 1st place in finances and data mining competition
A team with members from INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) and from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP) has recently won a competition on credit rating as part of the conference BRICS-CCI & CBIC 2013 - Countries Congress on Computational Intelligence, which took place between 3 June and 19 August. The results were announced during the conference’s closing session in Brazil on 10 September.

Best Iberian dissertation belongs to INESC TEC researcher
José Luís Silva, a researcher at INESC TEC’s High Assurance Software (HASLab), is the winner of the 1st edition of the AISTI award (Iberian Association of Information Systems and Technology) for “Best Iberian Dissertation on Information Systems and Technology”. The INESC TEC researcher was the winner in a total of 27 applications.

INESC TEC team wins competition on methods to detect liveness in the iris
A team of researchers from INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) was the winner of the “LivDet Iris 2013” competition, which took place between June and July of this year. As part of the competition, participants compared different methodologies to detect liveness in iris recognition systems. The results were announced at the “IEEE BTAS 2013- Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems”, which took place in the United States between 29 September and 2 October.

ALTEC conference takes place for the first time in Portugal together with 2013 UTEN Conference
The 15th edition of the Conference on Latin Ibero-American Management of Technology - ALTEC 2013 took place at the Alfândega in Porto. This event occured simultaneously with the 2013 UTEN Annual Conference (University Technology Enterprise Network - Portugal). This was the first time that this event took place in Portugal, and was jointly organised by INESC TEC (Associate Laboratory coordinated by INESC Porto) and the Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research, IN+, IST Lisbon, in partnership with the Centre for Science and Technology Policy, University of São Paulo. Manuel Heitor (IN+, IST) and José Manuel Mendonça (UTEN Portugal, INESC TEC, FEUP) were respectively Chair and Co-Chair of the ALTEC conference.

INESC TEC organises conference on Public Service Media
INESC TEC has joined the RTP (Portuguese public TV network) and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) to organise the conference “Public Service Media in a Small Country with a Global Culture”, dedicated to the themes of public service media and new dimensions of the public broadcasting service. This new designation includes a communication service supported by the State that uses all available platforms, which include, other than radio and television, the online service and mobile applications.
