INESC TEC welcomes President of the IEEE

On 1 October, INESC TEC welcomed Peter Staecker, the President of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), an important association that promotes technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of society.

At INESC Porto’s building, the President of the IEEE had the opportunity to get familiarised with the activity of INESC TEC in the different components of Scientific Research and Technology Development, Consulting and Advanced Training, Technology Transfer and Launching of Technology-based Companies. While in Porto, Peter Staecker visited INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Microgrids and Electric Vehicles and the Laboratory of Robotics and Intelligent Systems. José Manuel Mendonça, President of INESC Porto, also participated in this visit.

Peter Staecker’s presence in INESC TEC was part of a three-day visit to Portugal, which included stops in Lisbon and Coimbra, as well as in other institutions in Porto, namely the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and UPTEC - Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto.

The purpose of this visit was to allow Peter Staecker to contact with the Portuguese reality and to get familiarised with the country's challenges in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics teaching, not only in high school, but also at a higher education level. It is expected that the presence of the President of the IEEE in Portugal will promote new support plans for the Portuguese reality.

The visiting IEEE committee also included the vice-president Gianluca Setti, José Fonseca de Moura and Martin Bastiaans, both members of the advisory board, and Rui Cruz, president of the Portuguese section of the IEEE. João Claro, the national director of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, also accompanied the visiting party.

The IEEE is the main society of electrical and computer science and engineering, and other related areas. It has over 425 thousand members.
