"I’m asked to write nonsense, which means that my reputation is on a downwards spiral, just as the national GDP. (...) This scam, planned by the Communication Service, may have helped tarnish my image", Mário Couto (USE)

INESC TEC participates in European Researchers’ Night

On 27 September, INESC TEC was once again represented at the European Researchers’ Night (NEI 2013), which took place at the Jardim Botânico (Botanical Garden) in Porto, Portugal.

Under the theme “Future 2020: how will life be in 2020?”, this year’s edition was promoted by the University of Porto, by the Centre of Astrophysics of the University of Porto (CAUP) and by the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology/National Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBMC.INEB). At the event, several institutions of the University of Porto had the opportunity to present innovative research and technological results.

How will cities look? What will our jobs be? What sources of energy will we be using? What will we eat? How will we cure and prevent illnesses? These are some of the subjects that were addressed by the researchers.

As part of the theme “The Electric Grids in the Future”, and taking into consideration the integration of distributed renewable sources and electric mobility, INESC TEC presented the electric vehicle Twizi to explain the evolution of power systems.

Other initiatives took place simultaneously focusing on the changes expected for 2020, on the way we live and the challenges that society will be facing in seven years. Projects presented addressed, for instance, areas related to alternative sources of energy, urban and food development, and the ageing population. The programme also included experimental hands-on activities, screening of films, observational astronomy, discussions, exhibitions and an open bar.

The aim of the 2013 European Researchers’ Night was to bring the general public closer to the scientific community. This was an opportunity for the most curious people to get to know the advanced and innovative work that different institutes are carrying out, and also to promote the dialogue with the researchers who are working on these projects.

According to Ciência Viva, this event has been taking place annually since 2005, with activities being organised simultaneously all over Europe. In the same day, and at the same time, hundreds of institutions from 300 European cities promoted an informal meeting between scientists and audiences from all ages. Ciência Viva coordinates this initiative in 28 locations from northern to southern Portugal, together with the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology, the Institute for Chemical and Biological Technology, the Centre of Astrophysics of the University of Porto, the Science Museum Foundation of the University of Coimbra and the Universities of Lisbon, Évora, Algarve, Azores and Madeira.
