"I will dedicate this space in BIP to one of the most challenging projects I ever participated in – the Laboratory of Microgrids and Electric Vehicles.", Clara Gouveia (USE)

Free Nonsense

"I’m asked to write nonsense, which means that my reputation is on a downwards spiral, just as the national GDP. (...) This scam, planned by the Communication Service, may have helped tarnish my image", Mário Couto (USE)

HASLab/INESC TEC starts European project on managing data technologies in the “cloud”

In October, the High Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab), a Privileged Partner of INESC TEC, started working on its first European project within INESC TEC, the “CoherentPaaS: A Coherent and Rich PaaS with a Common Programming Model”.

The “CoherentPaaS” will provide a PaaS (“Platform as a Service”) with different data stores optimised for specific tasks, data and workloads. The “CoherentPaaS” will integrate NoSQL and SQL data stores, as well as management systems with holistic coherence, which will process complex data that can be accessed by using a common query language.

This way, the “CoherentPaaS” will make it possible to develop applications for Big Data and the Internet of Things that explore the performance and scalability of new management technologies in the cloud, while hiding the complexity of the underlying technology under a unified query language and holistic coherence across data stores that will make it easier to develop applications.

Practically, the results of the “CoherentPaaS” will provide a more standardised programming framework to app developers, simplified thanks to the common query language, the holistic coherence and the scalability guaranteed by the data management technologies in the cloud. Furthermore, the “CoherentPaaS” promotes a higher efficiency as it makes it possible to use different cloud data managers for specific tasks (such as, online transaction processing, analytics and complex event processing).

The project has a duration of three years and it involves teaching institutions and companies from Spain, Greece, France, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdon, besides Portugal. The HASLab team involved in the project includes researchers Rui Oliveira, José Orlando Pereira, Ricardo Vilaça and Miguel Matos.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this article are associated with the following partner institutions: U.Minho.
