INESC TEC develops technology that monitors frying oils using optical systems and smartphones
A unique technology in the world, made in Portugal, will make it possible to control the quality of frying oils using optical and software systems that register and monitor data through smartphones. The R&D project brought together INESC TEC, AMBIFOOD, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP) and ASAE’s Chemistry Lab.

Part of INESC TEC mission is to provide advanced training at its R&D centres in their different areas of expertise. July was a month dedicated to advanced training. Several INESC TEC researchers have organised three summer schools – visum, MAP Breast and ASCOS. The first two were promoted by researchers from the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), and the last by the Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP).

On 28 May, with the change of the statutes of INESC Porto, which included a change in the name of the institution, INESC Porto officially became INESC TEC – Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science.

Project for efficient forest fire management comes to an end
The project FIRE-ENGINE, developed by INESC TEC’s Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CITE), has come to an end with a public presentation of results at the Biblioteca Municipal de Valongo, on 6 May. The event was attended by the INESC TEC researchers who participated in project FIRE-ENGINE, João Claro and Abílio Pereira Pacheco.

INESC TEC technology allows users to watch 3D concerts and choose most interesting perspective
The “Personalized Multiview Environment”, developed at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) together with FEUP as part of the research line “Media, Arts & Technologies (MAT)”, enables immersive personalised experiences, presenting 3D contents to the users based on their preferences. These preferences are perceived according to the image area that the user focuses on at any instant. This prototype can be used in different areas, such as music, education, health, or tourism.

Portuguese startups raise 60 million dollars’ worth of funding in the US
José Manuel Mendonça, Chairman of INESC TEC and Scientific Director of the UTEN Portugal Program, travelled to the University of Texas at Austin, USA, with a group of startup companies as part of the Global Startup Program. The goal is to support Portuguese startups through partnerships and American capital. Some of the projects have already signed contracts and obtained funding worth a total of 60 million dollars.

Project ICARUS demonstrated in search and rescue operations
On 9 and 10 July, the robots developed as part of project ICARUS were presented at the ICARUS Sea Trials Lisbon 2015, which took place at the Base Naval de Alfeite (Naval Base of Alfeite, Portugal). INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB) is leading the maritime component, as a result of their experience in aquatic robotics.
