Just because someone buys meat in a butcher's shop doesn't mean it is free of biogenic amines. And remember... when asking for minced meat make sure you watch them doing it!, Luís Coelho (CAP)

INESC TEC participates in the 1st Energy Forum dedicated to the energy transition

INESC TEC was invited to participate in the 1º Fórum Energia (in English “1st Energy Forum”), which was held between 16 and 17 July in Lisbon and was dedicated to the energy transition implications, challenges and opportunities. This initiative aimed at debating the main challenges and opportunities in political and business terms for the energy sector, while at the same time seeking to become a reference for all the agents that operate in this area. Luís Seca, Member of the Executive Board of INESC TEC, João Peças Lopes, Associate Director of the institution, and Ricardo Bessa, Assistant Coordinator of INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES) participated in this debate.

The themes of the first edition of this forum were selected with the aim of debating the steps that are anticipated in the evolution of the energy sector in Portugal and, for that reason, they were focused on six major topics: 1) Strategic guidelines of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Transition (MATE): short term & energy transition; 2) sustainability and democratisation of energy, 3) today’s challenges; 4) networks and interconnections; 5) market and 6) inevitable future.

The opening session was carried out by João Belo, Director-General of Grupo About Media, responsible for the organisation of this session, Fernando Santana, Director of the newspaper Água e Ambiente and João Galamba, Secretary of State for Energy.

Luís Seca moderated one of the debates, which took place in the afternoon of the first day of the “Energy Forum”, aiming at debating the readiness level of the sector for the implementation of the energy transition and what would the indispensable conditions be in order to face the predictable demands of this new paradigm. With the theme “Sustentabilidade e democratização da energia – a antevisão do setor” (in English “Sustainability and democratisation of energy – preview of the sector “, the Member of the Executive Board of INESC TEC moderated a panel composed of six guests from some of the most relevant institutions in the sector: Pedro Amaral Jorge (Chairman of APREN’s Board), Jorge Mendonça e Costa (Executive Director of APIGCEE), António Castro (General Director of EDP), Pedro Almeida Fernandes (Member of the Executive Board of Endesa’s Sustainability Board), Carlos Costa Pina (Member of the Executive Board of GALP) and João Faria Conceição (COO of REN).

João Peças Lopes was the speaker of the 2nd day of this initiative. The presentation made by INESC TEC’s Associate Director was related to the subject “Redes e Interligações – concessões de baixa tensão” (in English “ Networks and Interconnections – low voltage concessions) and aimed at presenting the challenges and opportunities in terms of the attribution of the LV network concessions.

Also on 17 July, Ricardo Bessa made a presentation entitled “Inteligência Artificial & Energia” (in English “Artificial intelligence Energy”) in the “Futuro Inevitável” (in English “Inevitable Future”) panel, identifying the main advantages of the technologies for the energy sector and presenting use cases developed by INESC TEC for electricity markets, distribution networks and energy efficiency.

More than 40 speakers, among members of the Government, companies, research institutions and universities, took the stage in an initiative that brought together the biggest players of the Portuguese energy sector.
