Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC.

After leaving Porto and finishing PhD, I joined Netsuite Czech Republic as a Site Reliability Engineer. NetSuite is a leading cloud ERP company with thousands of customers thus the goals are uptime, performance and security. Our role as a team in the company is to ensure those goals are met. Our scope is everything from hardware monitoring, networks to application and services.

In such a large environment, it is necessary to move from reactive monitoring of systems and services to pro-active monitoring. This includes using various tools to predict failures, capacity management etc. Of course, one can never avoid being a ‘fire fighter’ in this kind of job, but the large amount of data that is collected by various monitoring components gives us the opportunity to use this data for our benefit and reduce the number of fires.

In LIAAD my work was about data stream mining. It is indeed interesting to see now in a real application the amount and speed of streaming data that needs to be processed and the compromises that one needs to take so that it does not cause too much of additional load or otherwise slow down the normal operations. At the same time these techniques are not always necessary and simple approaches suffice. Especially since they may be easier for other people to understand and maintain.

There are lots of possibilities that are waiting  for data mining  to be applied to will help to improve the experience for our customers and also ease the everyday life of the operations people.

In your opinion how did your time at INESC TEC help you in your new role?

It definitely helped me to be hired for this position in a first place. In is exciting that I can apply some of the methods that I learned about during my stay in Porto in a real large scale environment.

In your opinion, how  has INESC Porto changed since you left?

Honestly, I did not have time to follow the INESC TEC news so I cannot tell much about this subject.
