INESC Porto’s innovative software for breast cancer screening
In conjunction with a team from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), INESC Porto has developed software that can automatically analyse mammograms. The process is based on comparing similar cases and the software automatically analyses and validates cases where a breast cancer diagnosis is clear. The project is called Semantic PACS and is an innovative system that is 100% reliable when detecting malignant tumours. It reduces the waiting time for a diagnosis, thus reducing the patient’s emotional stress, and represents a significant advance in the detection of breast cancer.

Youngsters learn to be entrepreneurs at INESC Porto
“Discovering my entrepreneurial side” is the name of the placement offered by INESC Porto in partnership with Ciência Viva. Over the last few years this programme has brought youngsters from secondary schools together bridging the gap between school and the world of business. Over seven days six youngsters from the sixth form were given the opportunity to participate in an intensive work placement at INESC Porto, where they learned how to become entrepreneurs.

MCTES renews INESC Porto LA’s statute as Associate Laboratory
The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Mariano Gago, has signed the order on INESC Porto LA’s status as Associate Laboratory to renew the statute for 10 more years, which will correspond to the funding scheme of five years plus a further five years. Within the order, the new LA model incorporates INESC Porto and the Associate Units.

INESC TEC is the new name proposed for the Associate Laboratory
The new architecture of the Associate Laboratory led to the new designation, INESC TEC, or INESC Technology and Science, which will replace the current name, INESC Porto LA. This proposal was accepted by the remaining institutions in the INESC group and has been submitted to the FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) to be approved as the official title of the Associate Laboratory. This recognition should be confirmed shortly.

INESC Porto and the Portuguese Navy sign partnership agreement at the Fair of the Sea
The Fair of the Sea that took place between 16th and 19th June at the Exponor (Matosinhos) was chosen for the signing of the partnership agreement between INESC Porto and the Naval Research Centre of the Portuguese Navy. This partnership between the two institutions will aim to join synergies to become leaders in the maritime economy.

José Carlos Príncipe receives IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award
José Carlos Príncipe, President of the Scientific Advisory Board at INESC Porto, was recently awarded the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Neural Networks Pioneer award. The award will be presented on August 3rd in a gala dinner for the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN 2011) in San Jose (California, USA).

INESC Porto director welcomed in Chile
The director of INESC Porto, Vladimiro Miranda, was invited by the MP Alberto Robles to visit Chile from 13th to 17th June as part of a mission to build links between the two countries. The director was accompanied by the Latin American advisor Alexandre Rocco and the Coordinator of the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit, Eduardo Silva.

Final tests for TriMARES before it heads to Brazil
The Douro river was the site chosen for the final tests for the underwater robot TriMARES, before it leaves for Brazil. These tests that took place on May 12th aimed to analyse the logistics of placing TriMARES in the water using a ramp. The experiments also involved testing the acoustic positioning system, testing the tracking system from the shore station and testing sending signals to abort missions. They also tested how the vehicle communicates when it is not connected to an operator and how it completes predefined routes autonomously.

The Power Systems Unit (USE) at INESC Porto will participate in the European project “innovative Tools for Electrical System security within Large Areas (iTESLA)”, which is part of the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme. The aim of the project is to develop a flexible toolbox to support the future operation of pan European electrical energy transmission networks.

The Power Systems Unit (USE) at INESC Porto will take part in the European project, "Design of a decision support tool for sustainable, reliable and cost-effective energy strategies in cities and industrial complexes (CitInES)". Project CitInEs is part of the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme that aims to develop tools to support cities and industry when making decisions regarding the planning of power systems.

Alberto Pinto, Vice-Director of the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), an INESC Porto LA Associate Unit, was elected president of the International Centre for Mathematics (CIM). Alberto assumed his role as president on 20th May.

European decision support project looks to INESC TEC
e-POLICY is the name of the European project linked to the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) that will be developed by the Center for Research in Advanced Computer Systems (CRACS) and the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD). e-POLICY will begin in October 2011 and presents a multidisciplinary approach with the aim of supporting political agents in the decision-making process.
