INESC TEC technology takes to the high seas
Imagine if a ship of passengers runs a ground or sinks on the high sea and the weather conditions do not permit search and rescue teams to save the victims. One solution could be to use autonomous robots to support the search and rescue teams in this type of disaster. Project ICARUS (Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations) is exactly this.

INESC TEC – an institute to be proud of
On 30th and 31st January INESC TEC received a visit from the SAB - Scientific Advisory Board following the last evaluation three years ago. The SAB is a group of leading international researchers that the Directors invite to evaluate INESC TEC and offer suggestions for the continuous improvement of the institute. The evaluation this year could not have been more positive: according to the SAB, INESC TEC has suffered exponential growth, it continues to strive for high-quality science and publications and it is an institute we should be proud of.

GimmeDaBlues Application wins ZON Creativity in Multimedia 2011 Award
The musical application GimmeDaBlues developed by a team of researchers at INESC TEC won first prize in the category “Multimedia Contents and applications” in the ZON Creativity in Multimedia 2011 Awards. The majority of the team also work closely with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). The award ceremony took place on 31st January at the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon.

INESC TEC promotes competitiveness in European SMEs
The European project Net-Challenge (www.netchallenge.org) led by INESC Porto, the coordinating entity of INESC TEC, was concluded at the end of February. The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) participated in this innovative project that aimed to improve the competitiveness of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises by creating and managing collaborative business networks.

European project H-Know draws to a close with excellent results
The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) attended the final evaluation meeting of Project H-Know – Advanced Infrastructure for Knowledge Based Services for Buildings Restoring on 31st January 2012 in Brussels. According to the evaluators, all project objectives were achieved successfully and the results demonstrate great potential.

INESC TEC sensors monitor environment
On 1st January the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) at INESC TEC, coordinated by INESC Porto, began project Senseiver: Low-cost and energy-efficient LTCC sensor/IR-UWB transceiver solutions for a sustainable healthy environment. This is an innovative project to develop sensors that will be used to monitor environmental parameters. The project will run for four years.

INESC TEC begins project iTESLA
The Power Systems Unit (USE) at INESC TEC represented by André Madureira participated in the opening of project iTELSA that took place on 18th January in Paris at the RTE (the French transmission system operator and project leader). The meeting of the Executive Board (Comité Executivo) aimed to discuss the initial work and the main tasks that will be developed over the first three months.

INESC TEC’s Multidisciplinary Work on ACM Computing Surveys
A team with researchers from three INESC TEC Units – the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) and the Unit of Industrial Management and Engineering (UGEI) – have conducted a study that was recently accepted for publication in the international journal, ACM Computing Surveys. The tile of the work is "Ensemble Approaches for Regression: a Survey" and once again it shows INESC TEC’s multidisciplinarity.

INESC TEC Supports Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering
INESC TEC is helping to organise the conference StudECE2012, organised by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). The main target audience is PhD students working in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The event will take place on 28th and 29th June and the organising committee has four INESC TEC researchers, all of them PhD students.

Alberto Pinto from LIAAD/INESC TEC has been named chief editor of the Journal of Dynamics and Games (JDG) by the American Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

University of Bristol puts HASLab/INESC TEC work in the limelight
In a press release the University of Bristol in the UK highlighted work by the High Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab), an INESC TEC Privileged Partner and three foreign researchers (from Finland, Belgium and the UK) for its contribution to high assurance software.

INESC TEC hosts French university
On 7th March INESC TEC hosted a visit from 30 Masters students studying European Project Management at the University of Cergy-Pontoise in France. In addition to visiting INESC TEC, the group also had the opportunity to visit PRODUTECH – the Production Tecnology Centre, coordinated by José Carlos Caldeira, the Director of INESC Porto (the coordinating entity of INESC TEC).
