INESC TEC invests in technology for the Sea
INESC TEC participated in the second edition of the Sea Fair 2012, which took place between 10 and12 May at the Exponor in Matosinhos. As part of this international fair, INESC TEC signed two protocols with CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research) and the IPMA (the new Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere), a ceremony which was attended by the President of the Portuguese Republic and the Secretary of State for Maritime Affairs.

INESC TEC sensors identify DNA in wines
The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) of INESC TEC has recently started an innovative project in the biosensors area, in collaboration with the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), the National Institute of Biological Resources (INRB) and SOGRAPE, LDA (Sociedade Agrícola S. Mateus), where the aim is to develop an optical biosensor to detect DNA hybridisation processes which can be used in wine traceability.

INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has recently concluded the project Living Usability Lab (LUL) – Living Laboratory for the Use of Innovative Technologies in Next Generation Networks, a collaborative R&D project between academia and industry in Portugal. The project aimed to develop technologies that allow senior citizens to become more healthy and active.

INESC TEC's Power Systems Unit (USE) is currently collaborating with the EDP Distribuição (a Portuguese electricity distribution company) in a project where the aim is to implement procedures that will allow the distribution network to estimate the investments required for the electricity distribution network.

From 27 to 29 June, the Faculty of Science of University of Porto (FCUP) hosted the 10th edition of the Symposium on Enabling Optical Networks and sensors (SEONs), which was organised by INESC TEC. As part of this symposium, the Portuguese Society for Research and Development in Optics and Photonics (SPOF) organised, in collaboration with INESC TEC and the IT-Aveiro, the first Summer School on Recent Advances in Optics and Photonics.

INESC TEC’s Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) organised the second edition of the SEEW – Science and Engineering Entrepreneurship Workshop – Leaning by Doing, which took place between 9 and 13 de July. This event was supported by the Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (I3S – the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health), by the Engineering Innovation Institute of the University of Florida and by the University of Porto.

Armando Leite da Silva, a former collaborator at INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE) – who collaborates regularly with the institution and was awarded with the title of INESC Porto Fellow – was nominated to receive the IEEE PES Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award for the year 2012.

An article written by José Paulo Leal, Vânia Rodrigues and Ricardo Queiroz, researchers at INESC TEC’s Centre for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS), was awarded the "Best Paper Award" as part of the 2012 SLATE Conference, held in Braga, Portugal, on 21 and 22 June. As part of the same conference, CRACS researchers Ricardo Rocha and Miguel Areias received the award for best presentation.
