INESC TEC welcomes a Director of the Brazilian National Petroleum Agency

On 29 June, INESC TEC welcomed Alan Kardec, a Director at the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuel (ANP) of Brazil. The purpose of the visit was to demonstrate INESC TEC’s activity, particularly in the areas of robotics, optoelectronics and energy.

This visit occurred after Vladimiro Miranda, a Director at INESC Porto (the entity coordinating INESC TEC), visited the facilities of the Brazilian institution. According to Vladimiro Miranda, "the reason behind this invitation that we addressed to Alan Kardec is that, at INESC TEC, we are quite interested in the oil exploration area, a component that we have been studying with the Brazilian oil company Petrobras."

Alan Kardec had the opportunity to visit the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS), as underwater robotics is essential for oil exploration, as well as the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE), given the importance of sensors in this area. Finally, the Brazilian Director also stopped by the Power Systems Unit (USE), another area of interest to the ANP.

For Vladimiro Miranda, the goal was to demonstrate that INESC TEC had "the conditions to perform research and development in these areas of interest to the Brazilian agency". According to the Portuguese Director, Alan Kardec "was already convinced of INESC TEC’s technical capability, but this time he was particularly impressed with our business, innovation and technology transfer model". “It is hard to find a match to this model in Brazil”, stated Vladimiro Miranda. In the future, there will be further discussion on this model.

According to Vladimiro Miranda, there may be collaboration with the ANP in two ways: "one has to do with us working together with partner universities in Brazil that have certified laboratories or are undergoing accreditation - and if we are going to work together with Brazilian partners, it seemed important to allow the Regulator to understand what we are proposing to do". In addition, "we envision a cooperation in the areas of innovation and technology management".

Finally, also as part of his stay in Porto, Alan Kardec had the opportunity to join a discussion panel at the Conference StudECE2012 (1st PhD Students Conference in Electrical and Computer Engineering).
