INESC Porto Fellow wins IEEE award

Armando Leite da Silva, a former collaborator at INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE) – who collaborates regularly with the institution and was awarded with the title of INESC Porto Fellow – was nominated to receive the IEEE PES Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award for the year 2012.

The aim with this award is to acknowledge individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the area of power systems reliability. The award worth three thousand dollars will be given by the Power & Energy Society.

For the researcher, who is also a Professor at the Federal University of Itajubá, Brazil, this is the acknowledgement of over 30 years of experience in Electrical Engineering. His work is based on power systems planning and operation, specifically: power generation systems reliability, transmission, distribution, maintenance, Monte Carlo simulations, optimisation, real-time monitoring and electricity markets.

Armando Leite da Silva has a Degree and a Master’s Degree in Electric Engineering (PUC-Rio – Pontifícia Universidade Católica in Rio de Janeiro (1975) and COPPE-UFRJ – Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1977), respectively). He concluded his PhD at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department (UMIST) from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (1980), in the United Kingdom. Armando Leite da Silva was an invited researcher at INESC Porto between 2003 and 2004. He received several prestigious awards throughout his career, including the PMAPS Merit Award in 2010 for his contribution to probabilistic methods in Power Systems.
