Where are you now?

Every month INESC TEC sends highly qualified individuals into the market. These individuals often then go on to occupy important positions in some of the best national and international companies or they opt to form spin-offs. As the best way to perform technology transfer is through individuals, this section is dedicated to collaborators that trained at INESC TEC and now star in other companies and institutions.

Nelson Ferreira, Ubiquity Technology, Senior Software Engineer

  • Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2012-2014
  • Centre at INESC TEC where you worked: CESE - Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering
  • Names of projects you were involved in: Newton PacPorticos (supervised by the César Toscano), PRODUTECH (supervised by Pedro Ribeiro and Rui Rebelo)

Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC

Since I left INESC TEC, I’ve been working at Ubiquity Technology. In my opinion, this company has a very avant-garde philosophy, where there is a schedule exemption, however people have the responsibility to fulfil their tasks within the defined timeline. This kind of mindset allows a greater flexibility for the workers, making them feel more motivated and dedicated to the projects in which they are involved.

My professional experience has always been about the development of frameworks and software oriented towards services, for different areas such as education, transports, telecommunications among others.

One of the projects in which I participated, both in the conception and development parts, actually received an European award (EURIS Elite Award 2016). It was a project that involved gathering the services of several Portuguese universities in just one place.

I’ve already worked as a consultant to several national and international companies. More recently, I’ve been working remotely in some projects for a USA company of hazardous substances transportation. The projects involve the migration of thousands of services to a mobile reality.

In your opinion how did your time at INESC TEC help you in your new role?

My time at INESC TEC mostly helped me to understand, in a practical way, how software development in a professional context works. My supervisors had different skills and I tried to absorb the knowledge that they passed on. César Toscano put too much emphasis on planning and documentation. Pedro Ribeiro taught me the importance of the software quality, the organisation of the code and the testing. Rui Rebelo was constantly warning me about the user experience, which I must say that I’m still terrible at this, but fortunately I work with professionals who are specialists in this area.

I think INESC TEC is an excellent opportunity for everyone that wants to learn “how to do things right” with experienced professionals. The acquisition value of this knowledge is priceless.

In your opinion, how has INESC TEC changed since you left?

Honestly, I haven’t been paying much attention to the changes in INESC TEC because unfortunately I don’t get in touch with my former colleagues who still work there. But I am sure they have changed for the better. I have seen several news in the media and in social networks that talk about some projects developed at INESC TEC and I cannot hide how proud I am of already having flown the institute’s flag.

I also take this opportunity to thank my former supervisors for their patience in guiding me, especially to César Toscano, who helped me so much in the preparation of my Master's thesis.
