USIC participates in Ocean Observatory for the Iberian Coast

The project RAIA - Ocean Observatory for the Iberian Coast has been recently approved. The aim with this project is to implement a cross-border ocean observation network that consolidates operational oceanography on the Iberian coast, thus creating new scientific and technologic opportunities that promote ocean economy.

With INESC Porto’s support, the project will entail four main activities: to create, complete and consolidate a cross-border ocean observation infrastructure; adapt and validate operational oceanography models that reproduce the regional dynamics; establish cross-border interoperability platform that will be used to manage and distribute data; and develop a management model for the cross-border ocean observatory and tools for end-users.

This project is financed by the Operational Programme for the Cross-border Cooperation between Portugal and Spain 2007-2013, Cooperation Area of Galicia – North of Portugal. The consortium is set up by the Technology Institute for Marine Environment Control in Galicia (INTECMAR), the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), Institute of Marine Research (CSIC-IIM), the Technological Centre for Sea Studies (CETMAR), University of Vigo, Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute, INEGI and INESC Porto. The lead partner is the Conselharia de Meio Ambiente e Desenvolvimento Sustentável (Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development) of the Xunta de Galicia.

INESC Porto will be represented in this project by the Information and Communication Systems Unit (USIC). The Unit will participate in the development of a cross-border interoperability platform that will be used to manage and distribute data. The team is led by Artur Rocha, responsible for the Location-based Information Systems.
